C-123 Rebuild

Someone during a previous engine rebuild had replaced one of the head studs with a regular bolt. I was looking at the parts breakdown book and it shows 3 different head stud part numbers; 6 with one part number, 2 with another part number and then 1 with another part number. The one I am missing is the third one from the front of the engine on the distributor side. Does anyone have an idea which one I should order? Obviously, I don't want the head to leak, and I am a little concerned about trying to torque this bolt. The sad part about this whole thing; I have scrapped 3 different C-113's and 123's and didn't save any of the studs. It just goes to prove that once you get rid of something, that is when you are going to need it. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Lewis

Thanks for the responses, but there is no parts counterman that I have access to that is going to be able to give me any idea of what stud I looking for. I am including any local CaseIH dealers. The last time I had any dealings with the nearest CaseIH dealer in Aliceville, Al, I sent the guy a list of parts I was going to purchase. After a couple of emails back and forth, he basically told me they didn't want to fool with getting the parts in for old tractors. I then contacted Carter & Gruenwald and ordered the seals and bearings, etc. for my Super A. As for as stud size and thread, etc., the bolt is the same size and thread as the other studs, but it just worries me about torqueing the bolt instead of a stud.
Thanks again!

Okay, so maybe we have to punt a bit.

The parts catalog for my Super C list several heads , but only one number for the head studs. That number is 24 433 D (spaces are the same as in the catalog). Persuasion ought to get your CaseNH guys to just shut up and order it. NAPA might be able to cross it. If NAPA can't do it with the number, they should be able to do it with the specs.

The stud will be a better job than the bolt, whcih is my way of saying I think you're doing the right thing by trcking down the stud and adding the bolt to your spare parts collection. Can't tell you why, I just believe they made them that way for a reason that hasn't revealed itself to me yet.

So you can go to Carter and Gruenewald with that number (or I saw another supplier mentioned below) and order that part.

Or you can slip some nuts of known size over the two ends of your stud and have NAPA or whoever order one of the proper length. Odds are they're the same diameter at both ends, just NC on one end and NF on the other. Or get thee to (I hate to say it) HD or, better yet, a hardware that has all the parts drawers. The will often have a thread gauge. It will be a little card with nuts and bolt ends set into it that you can thread your piece into to verify the diameter and pitch.

Thanks again guys. Now I am getting somewhere. I have sent an email to Carter & Gruenwald. Thanks also to you Mike for the name of the dealer in Alabama. I am in east central Mississippi and as far as I know the only CaseIH dealer in Mississippi is in the Delta. In this area, we don't have the support for tractors at parts dealers like what the mid-west does. Usually, NAPA isn't any help except for oil filters, points and condenser, etc. If you go beyond that, they claim they can't get the part. Thanks again!

Just for a whim, I looked in the parts catalog for my BN (a 113) and the part # for the stud is the same as for the 123. Doesn't seem like ought to be to exotic.

You should, but if you don't, get an email reply from C&G, call them up at 608-455-2411 and ask for Ken or Gary. They'll fix ya right up.

Lewis: Scotty is right, a good counter man will have that in a min. You just tell him which one is missing. I think the only difference is length, but not 100% certain on that.

If all else fails, try to get one of your studs out, measure it for diameter and thread pitch on both ends, and for length. A good counterman can help you with pitch if you don't have a gauge.
