Howdy, boys. Someone posted a question earlier about a 3-ph on a 560 and it prompted quite a bit of discussion. I also want a 3-pt for either my SH or SM. It would be nearly always used for above ground implements. They say you get what you pay for, but my question is: Do I really nead a $700 + $200 freight, dual cylinder "Rolls-Royce" Saginaw 3-point hitch, or are there good performing single cylinder 3-points that please their owners? The salvage yard nearest me has three used ones for sale from $300 to $350, and they all look pretty good. In fact, one looks like a Saginaw, except it has mounting points for only one cylinder. By the way.... my tractors both have two-way valves. I don't want to buy and have regrets - and I don't want to waste $ on something unnecessary. Thanks for your advice. I appreciate all of you. mike durhan

If you want a real 3 point put one of these on. It's the parts of a fast hitch from a junk yard. I made the arms and mounting brackets.

Only 13.6's huh? They just looked much bigger than that to me. Thanks! I see that Nebraksa Tire is running a special on some of the BFG old style treads (8 ply, new tires, 13.6x38) for 199. I might have to look into them...

I was going to try to find some 14.9x38, but those arent easy to come by unless you want to give up an arm and a leg...

Glennster,

What size tires are you running on your M in those photos?

I got one from Ludens Implement in SD, it's called a Cross, basically it has the same rating and almost looks the same as the "SAGINAW" it is however a couple hundred dollars cheaper. Look em up on the net they have a variety.

Mike: I can build you a draft controlled hitch, but it will cost you $4,000. I trust that may be a bit pricey.

your right allan i have one. it needs to go lower bout the only thing i,m using mine for is a hay fork and a rock rake i still use the draw bar a lot also for draging trailers around

A 560 fasthitch only has one cylinder and mine will pick up enough raise the front end right up. Will carry a 1500 lb. round bale with a litle front end weight. Lee

There is a lot of overkill built into Saginaw -- but your tractor will wear out before it does, and Farmalls are not known to wear out. Overkill because it is listed for the H-450, will work on a 560 and later. A slightly cheaper Saginaw is made for the C, it will fit the others too, uses only one cylinder, I don't know if you can use the original drawbar on it or not, since the C has another type that does not interfere at all with the hitch. As to strength, I have a cheaper no name on my M with very light cat 1 arms, the way I have used it it should have bent by now, but it hasn't. Sounds like the salvage yard ones might work for you. Also Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch sells another brand, I forget what it is. It has its own drawbar, uses one cylinder, considerably cheaper the Saginaw. Worksaver is likely OK, I did not get one for my C because it uses the front arms and a rod, H uses a cylinder.

I have an unknown brand that I bought from Tri Green equip. in London Oh. I could'nt use the original hitch, so I use a tool bar and I have a bar rigged to keep it from turning. It's been okay, a friend borrowed the tractor once and noticed a bad weld and fixed it for me. Other than that, no problems. I can easily lift the front off the ground lifting heavy things with the lift boom.

I have a Worksaver for my H. It works great. It can be used with one cylinder. If I had to do it again, I would buy the Saginaw so I could keep the original draw bar.

If the local junkyard has one for $300, buy it, try it, and if you don't like it, it should still be worth $300 when you sell it.

Greg

i dunno allan, my m will just about put the arms to the ground on that saginaw. heres a couple pics of it, the turnbuckles are snugged up tight to get the mower up high, if i open em up, i prolly can bury the mower in the ground!!

I thought that too but, my Dads Super M has had Saginaw since seventys and I have used it for planter, cultivator and rotary cutter amoung other things and hitch arm height has never been a problem.

Ive got 2 3pt hitches on 2 different Ms, one Worksaver, one Saginaw. While the Saginaw is better built, FOR ME, both dop the same job, so I see no advantage of the Saginaw over the Worksaver. However, I dont do much lifting with either, just a bushhog or my smoothing harrow, both light.

I'm not real familiar with the single cylinder ones, but it occurs to me that if you arent lifting real heavy implements they should be fine. I just took a dual cylinder one off of an MTA. Before I removed it, I hooked it to a 5-16 semi mounted plow just to see how it would behave. Picked it right up, but could'nt let the clutch out gentle enough to keep the front down. I'd think that for back blades and the like a single cylinder should be fine. By the way....that Super runnin better?

i bought a saginaw a couple years ago for my m. real nice hitch, has cat 1 and 2 balls in the end of the arms, so you can hook to either without sleeves. hitch also has pins in the top rear that can be removed to eliminate down pressure, nice for bush hogging. the hitch is well built, well thought out. i am real happy with it. i went and picked mine up from them. good guys, really good craftsmanship.

I bought a Saginaw several years ago. Zero problems, it's not cheap, but I think it is the best thing you could hang on there. I picked it up at their shop, a little place out in the country. Guy used to sell used international stuff too. I have used it for my post hole digger, rear blade, bush hog, 3 pt planter, carryall. It has removable pins, to float, cat one and two balls, and sway limiters. Really the Cadillac of hitches.

Spook: Calling a Saginaw a Cadillac of hitches, you've obviously never operated a factory 3 point hitch in the past 35 years. Don't get me wrong, I think Saginaw is good value for the money, it's just not a automatic draft controlled hitch. Draft controlled hitch would probably run you $4,000. plus.

Yeah, you are right about that. I was referring to the other aftermarket hitches and the older tractors like the Ford 8N. I have never run the newer Internationals and Deeres. My "New" tractor is a 55 300U. If its got draft control, I haven't noticed it? :))
