51 Farmall H. I replaced several transmission bearings and the clutch,. Did not remove the differential parts. Have ended up with this bolt left over. 3/4 by 7/16, coarse threads. Anyone know where it goes? Thanks, Jim

Thanks D Slator. You're right. I can just pull the input shaft out. Hadn't thought of that. Yes, the corners are rounded where it fits in the washer. That won't be too big a deal. I can just slide the drive shaft forward and remove the shaft. Thanks again. Jim

If there's a bolt in front of the pilot bearing I didn't put one back. This one is definitely a coarse thread. I have the cover on, front shaft and drive shaft all in. Looks like a long way back. GeneMo; It's going to be a couple days before I get back to this. If you pull that front shaft out let me know what you find. The IT shop manual doesn't show it. Thanks for the info. Jim

You don't have to take the top off to put bolt and washer in, but the input shaft has to come back out. On your model its a coarse thread. If you look at the bolt close you can see the inside corners of hex head are rounded just a little more than a regular bolt to fit in the concaved washer.

this is not tractor but is old Years ago mom had a '41 plymouth. rod bearing went out and I backed it in the barn and had at it. when I got it back together I could not fint the drain plug. I found a spark plug that fit. some months later the bearing went out again. when i tore it down again I found the plug laying on theframe flange. did not need the spark plug any longer
I was 16 then and almost 74 now

I believe the bolt that holds the pilot bearing in the top shaft is a fine thread. the washer sure looks right though.

J, good luck with that H. It sounds like this thread is taking on a somewhat comical note so I'll add a couple. One of my favorite screw drivers in my tool box I didn't buy, I fished it from the bottom of the fuel tank of one of my MM's. One time, at the conclusion of a complete overhaul of the rear end of MM 705, I put all my tools away and discovered that I was missing a side cutter. I dissembled the tractor far enough to expose the transmission and rear end, drained the new gear oil out and searched. It wasn't in there but I was going to make rear sure. I found it sometime later hiding in some harmless place.

I RESTORED A fARMALL REGULAR,AND PLOWED WITH IT ALL DAY AT OUR LOCAL PLOW DAY,I HAD A ROLLBACK HAUL THE TRACTOR FROM THE FIELD TO THE LOCAL FAIR,WHEN WE WENT TO UNLOAD IT,IT WOULD NOT MOVE BECAUES IT WAS STUCK IN 2 GEARS.i TORE THE REAR COVER OFF AND SEEN THE MAIN SHAFT HAD SLID AND COULDNT FIGURE OUT WHAT HELD IT IN PLACE.WENT TO SEE A FRIEND THAT WORKS ON OLD TRACTORS AND SOME GUY THAT HAPPENED TO BE THERE ASKED ME ABOUT THE BOLT IN THE END OF THE SHAFT.I HAD NO IDEA.WENT BACK HOME AND THERE WAS THE BOLT AND WASHER LAYING ON MY WORK BENCH

It goes on the front of transmission main shaft (top shaft) in the end. Bearing retainer for bearing that goes inside input shaft.

I had a mystery bolt like that in my A transmission and it ended up being the bolt that held the gear on the pto shaft and it took out third gear on the counter shaft.

Shaggy: Maybe it would match the bolt I found yesterday. I removed the pan under the pedals on my SA, hadn't had it off for 16 years. I wanted to clean some of the grease and soil mix out of there. Cleaning up and painting platform, fenders, seat, etc. That pan was packed full of soil and grease, and amoung all of it was a 5/8" bolt about 3-1/2" long. There is nothing up under there that size, I personally had pan off last time. Now, you guys got me wondering what bolt and where did I leave a bolt out 16 years ago. Maybe that's how I dealt with the left over bolt.

I had another funny one, 12" long screwdriver missing close to 3 years. One of those old amber hard plastic handles. I was certain it had never been outside the shop. One day I decided to check out an oil leak from SA valve cover. Wouldn't you know, my screwdriver laying between manifold and valve cover. Couple of singed spots on handle, but other than that, very useable. And to think that could have bounced forward into fan and rad. Prooves a Super A lot smoother than most of us think.
