I know this has been talked about before, but not sure what to do. I have a 656 in need of new sneekers on the rear. It currently has 15.5 x 38's on her now, but these tires look small. I would like to go to a taller tire, but not sure if it is a good idea or not and if it is a better idea, what size would you all suggest?

Dave

ours has the 34 inch rim option. i think maybe the original set was 16.9-34 dynatorque? tractor's got 8 years on me. My dad has put 18.4-34 on it since the second set. current set is traction field & road. full of fluid. been pleased with it. pulls pretty good. only remember it stuck bad maybe 2 times in my life.

I had 15.5's on the my 544D hydro. Hated them. Went to 14.9's with fluid. Was like a totally different tractor. 16.9's would be too bug for the 544, may be ok on the 656. We have em on the 1750 olicer and they work out great, but that is a bigger tractor.

Dave,

Those tires were put on the tractor for a reason and it all depends on what you will be using the tractor for. Is it a working outfit or a show tractor?

If you just want it to stand a little taller, but yet still perform the same, I'd go with the 14.9 x 38s.

At 55 drawbar horsepower, anything bigger really starts to mess with the tractor's performance and will also change it's speed quite a bit.

Allan: Kind of curious, I've been wondering for 45 years what the reason could possibly be for 15.5x38 on a 560 or 656. As far as I'm concerned 16.9x38 actually improved the ground speeds, made 2nd and 3rd far more useful. If a guy wanted creeper speeds he wouldn't buy a Farmall in the first place. In 5th gear with 16.9 it didn't take all day to go somewhere.

i tried 16.9s on one of the 656s and it looked way too tall. i ended up putting 14.9x38 on it, which gives more tire height than a 15.5 but not as much as a 16.9.

I agree, 16.9x38 is the size you want. Used to have a 686 with 16.9's. They don't look too tall.

Dave: My 656 and 560 were delivered new with 15.5x38. I was damn disappointed in those two tractors. My 300 on 13.6x38 had more clearence. I made a tractor out of each of them by installing 16.9x38. I was not doing any hard road hauling, 99.9% field work, thus I went from 15.5x38 with chloride to 16.9x38 no chloride, and you wouldn't believe they were the same tractors. With the new tires they had good clearence over hay windrows, pulled a 44 plate disk with 20" blades and a 5x16 semi-mount plow. If you want to pull on the field without compaction more rubber is the answer, NOT WEIGHT.

Yes, the drawbar does sit low and would like to correct that but thought 16.9's might make it too tall in the back. Not sure if the rim is 14 or 15" wide, not that it makes that musch of a difference

Have a 656 with 15.5-38s and a 666 with 16.9x38s. 666 sets level, 656 is low in back and drawbar is too low also. New tires? its going to be 16.9s no two ways about it.

In my opinion, the 15.5 x 38 is the ideal size for a Farmall 656.
