tryed putting a chevy alternator on my h when i hook up the main wire it arcs and heats up this was a 1 wire alt. tried with a standard alt. and had same issue anyone have any ideas

The starter will work fine grounded either polarity. But when switching to negative ground you'll need to swap the wires at the ammeter - otherwise it'll read "backward".

As Bob said. If you still have it + ground it will do just that can fry the alternator the moment you hook it up. You have to switch it to - ground or it will never work

Is per chance the the battery connected with the positive post grounded? If so it'll spark exactly as you describe when you connect the main wire.

Also there's a good chance you toasted both alternators the instant you got sparks.
