IH 400 6RN cornplanter conversion?

Hi,
I am looking at buying a 400 6 row narrow planter, but want to plant 4 row wide. Is there a way to change the planter over to 4 rows wide? I am fairly certain that they can be moved on the tool bar, but the seed drum would have 2 open slots(if that makes sense). Is there a way to block that off or change it easily, without having to buy any expensive parts?

Thanks,
John

There were 4 row wide, 6 row narrow, and 6 row wide 400 planters. There was also a 4 row wide/ 6 row narrow "convertible" planter. If its a convertible you will be able to convert to a 4 row quite easily as the wheel brackets are removable, whereas the 6 row narrow does not have the removable wheel brackets. All 4 row planters had the 6 row manifolds and drums and were blocked in the manifold and banded on the drum. I worked for an IH dealership in the 70's and we set up and started 40 some planters in 1975. Approximately 4-5 planters sold that year were the "convertibles".

James22,
That's an interesting point. It makes me wonder if I could use "great stuff" styrofoam insulation in a spray can, to block off the other holes. I am a machinist/prototype builder/mechanic/bodyman (yeah my job is confusing) so I probably could make something to block it up, but I figured the rubber bands were only a few dollars. $20 a piece, they had better last quite a while, or I am gonna start doing some engineering on that thing! I am going to pick up the planter on Saturday. AS far as teh wheel/tire spacing... Well, to me, that is a minor techinicality. I am sur eI could adapt brackets to move them. The nice thing abut farm equipment is that it is made with mostly standard stock. Anything that doesn't require mor ethan some steel stock adn welder is where I get into trouble.

Thanks again!
John

Yes "great stuff" would work fine on the manifold, just would be real tough to remove and use the outlets again. By plugging them it will require less fan load. I had the mentioned model 400 6 row convertible model, which would have been real easy to make into a 4 row. I have considered plugging the undesired drum holes with something such as silicone, but am concerned the tumbling seed might break some off and the resulting pieces cause problems. Frankly I have questioned why someone can't remove the discharge wheel rubber on the undesired rows and let the unwanted holes fill with seed that would never be used. Not very elegant but would work, and perhaps waste a hand-full of seed. An elegant "fix" would be to block the undesired holes with a tig welder. Many options.

Been a long time since I had mine .I don't see the drum bands being the main problem.I think the wheel spacing would be wrong on the main frame and the tires would be running on the row .Just a thought. These planters have been cut up for scrap by the 1000's in the midwest.I bought an 8 row wide that was in good shape last year for $80.00,took seed hopper off, hyd. cyl. ,marker cyls.6tires and wheels an scraped the rest.

Allen, Your right, I shouldn't have run off so quick!

Wow! You really made my day on this!

It looks like I was wrong onthe location, and it will be a 5 hour drive to get the planter. That's ok, I really need something better this year. I am running a Ford 309 2 row wide with dry fertilizer, and it takes forever to get the corn in the ground. Having a 4 row wide will be great with liquid fertilizer. I wish I could go 6 row wide, but I don't think you can take a 6 row narrow and make it wide. That would be too nice! There are too many hills around here to narrow up the tractor for 30 inch rows. I couldn't imagine those guys running 22 inch rows.

Thanks so much!
John

Those rubber bands are pretty expensive. I bought 4 last spring and believe they were $20/each. Didn't fuss too much because I believed they would last at least five years. Left them on after planting and 3 of the four broke within a few months. Immediately removed the good one. Going to look at tire rubber boots or tube patches to see if they can be used on the outside to splice the bands back together. The planter came with two of the rubber bands on the seed drum held together with multiple rounds of electrical tape. If the rubber boot/tube patches don't work, will consider this tape repair. CIH inactivates the undesired seed outlet manifold/tubes with closed cell styrofoam blocks.

Thanks for the help! I was apprehensive about driving 3 hours to Ohio to buy a corn planter.

I feel a little better about it.

Part #57669C3. They are called a "belt" and you'll need two. Duh! :>)

My 900 parts book calls out for 57669C4, which is probably just a later version. Spend a lot of time and money and never got the 400 monitor to work either. One of the primary reasons I went to the 900. The original owners said the monitor worked and it did.

Huh. I saw those bands on one once that was changed from 6 to 4 but I thought the farmer just cut some out of old inner tube. Now that you say IH made some, I bet that is what I saw.

I had bought mine when I ordered the planter new.

Have to remove those two rubber rimed wheels also or else they will force the stamped holes in the drum to cut thru the "rubber bands" over time.

Another tip: Take that seed monitor and throw it just as far as ya can heave it.

What a total waste of time those things were! :>(

IH "used" to sell rubber straps to cancel out the air on those two outer seed rows. All they are is a big wide rubber band affair.

Then, you take off the two outer drop wheels at the manifold.

I did that on a 500 for a year or two and it worked good.
