Wow.. just bought a 756 / 856 cab on ebay for $51 bucks and it's only an hour away! Hugh, I was going to follow your advice, but since it was so close, I figured I would put a small bid on it and I won. I noticed in the description it says

"IH 856 Cab above average condition we needed a cabless to fit in the barn this was a one owner tractor with very low hours and like new paint. just removed has all brackets and a tool box made for it this is the type that you do not remove your fenders or floor for...All Glass in perfect condition factory without heater or AC which is a plus no rust all paint still above average.."

Since it is the "type that you do not remove your fenders or floor for", I wonder if it is the same that Hugh modified, or if it is different and may be easier for me to deal with. As far as the backhoe goes, it has it's own seat outside, so that's no issue at all. If it still proves to be too tough, it will be going back on ebay at some later date, but I figured for $50 it was worth a shot. One other question, will I have any problem just strapping this thing onto a flatbed trailer, or do I need to bring packing material / box trailer etc?

Thanks!

Darren

In your case, I wouldnt worry about it! I just made the comment because bragging about a steal before you have received the item is does not make the seller feel very good and makes the potential for sellers remorse that much greater of a chance to take place! Sellers are more savvy these days and pay do their homework and research sites such as this to see what they feel their items should bring and then to potentially see you popping off like that they could just say lets make this guy sweat and look whats happened! Now you are thinking you got taken!

I wouldn't worry, yet. Some folks are just slow to respond.

Darren In Pesotum said: When I was bidding, I said "how bad can someone be that's into tractors" :)

I've said that before about car guys and model train guys (Two of my other mechanical passions)...and, gosh darn it, I've been screwed over by both of them. Buyer beware and all that is a little harsh sounding, so my advice is to deal with it though PayPal and eBay when the time comes...the threat of criminal charges is usually enough to get people to fess up.

Several years ago I got one free for my 706. By the time I had glass cut for it and foam bought and made mounts for it I had close to $1000 dollars sticking in my "free" cab.

Just last week I also won an auction for a new engine on ebay at an awesome price. You know I still dont have that engine nor have have I heard back from that seller. Seems to me there is an old farmers saying that goes dont count our chickens until your eggs have hatched. Wait until you have it in your in your hands to make such an boastful announcement because I would hate to be eating crow when someone decides to stiff you when they where expecting way more!

What do you suggest as a side dish with Crow? I still have not heard from the seller, so I may have gotten screwed here. Time will tell I suppose. Unfortunately, they required paypal payment so they have my $50. Also, that "Free cab" story and Hugh's info will definately be on my mind if and when I get the thing and evaluate the potential as a project.

Contact PayPal and E-Bay. Thay should help you. If you pay PayPal with a credit card. you can refuse to pay the PayPal charge. They are eager to maintain their integrity.

Thanks, I know about that already. It's only been 1 day, so I'll give them a chance to take care of it. 10 days is what ebay says, so we will see what happens in 10 days. My guess is they will ignore me until I have to file a compaint with ebay and paypal, but you never know. When I was bidding, I said "how bad can someone be that's into tractors" :)

Darren: Like me 33 years ago, I think you got a good buy, probably better than I did paying $500. for a new cab. At $51. it won't matter if you have elbo room, probably not so important as I thought earlier. I thought you operated the hoe from tractor platform.

You'll still run into same problems as I did, re; position of and distance from rear to fuel cap, plus the elevated floor at the pedals of the 656. The large chassis tractors have a flat floor, before cab. You will leave the fenders on, that's right, but I don't think it will change much. I think you'll find on 656 there are two positions for fender mount, you probably have to use the wide setting for that cab to sit between the fenders.

Hugh,

I'm going to pick it up and evaluate. If it looks like too much to deal with vs the money for the correct fitting one, I'll probably resell it... but for $51 I figure I can't really go wrong either way. I'll try and post a few pics when I get it.

Thanks for your advice!

Darren
