When a distributor is worn and needs to be rebushed, will that have the same effect on a pertronix type unit as points?

well, it needs to be rebushed anyway. but between the pertronix and new plugs, cap & rotor there has been no improvement. pretty sure it's fuel. rant: new needle and seat, carb passages poked and bowl gasket, float adjusted, etc. the frequented gas station changed brands and everything from lawnmowers, 4 wheeler, and tractors is having fuel problems of some sort. if you dump the sediment bowl out it will refill and immediately separate into a clear liquid on top and yellow liquid on bottom, with some suspended solids floating around until they settle. sounds a little like it did when the valves were burnt on one cylinder, but without the whistling. seems to have power except it sounds like a deere when you open up the throttle til it catches up, still a slight miss. once in awhile will starve for fuel and die, but never when i'm operating it. tappets are a little loose too, with the colder weather sounds like a JD R diesel, not so clicky but more like diesel knock. problems started when someone siphoned fuel out and it ran out while operating. frustrating when your efforts are for nothing.

From what you describe your fuel sounds suspect. Ever try a temporary fuel tank with known to be good fuel? Good luck!

I would think if the point rubbing block is exactly midpoint between the pivot point and the contacts , then it would be the same or nearly so. If the rubbing block in not at mid point but closer to the pivot point then a leveraging effect may come into play. In other words .003 play in the shaft to bushing will get you more than .003 variance at the contacts and affect you timing. IMO that is why people seem to love the Pertronix because they can run a somewhat worn dist. and all of a sudden the engine runs smoother and starts better.

James R is correct. I'll add that the bushing can be replaced with one a little longer to ride on a portion of shaft that is not worn (if the one you have has more than .001 wear groove in it that should be done, or the shaft replaced. Make sure the springs and weights in the advance are good and operational. A dab of light moly grease between the two shafts is also good. JimN

Sure it would , if it is worn that bad that the point gap changes it will also effect the pickup coil gap as well . Watch when you take it apart, the length of the bolts that hold the points plate [inside] can"t change .

I put some new ones in that were alittle longer and they hit the plate that spins around the weights . It bent the plate and made a mess out of everything . Watch how you put it back together .
