I can buy a bush hog for a good price. But I'm wondering how well it would do for around the house? Have any of you guys used a rough cut three point mower for a finish cut around the house? If so how well did it do? Thanks

Get a 7 foot sickle mower. Cut it as short as the weather will allow. I do about an acre around the houseand down the gravel road both sides 1/4 mile with a IH1000 7 footer, and the immediate front yard and around the buildings with a 52 inch Cub Cadet. I use a 7 foot Woods Brush Bull for mowing down unharvested food plots in the spring. But that's a job for the 966. I have a JD 350 7 foot sickle, and another IH1000 7 footer I would sell reasonable.

The reason is a 5-6 ft bush hog will have the single heavy blade, likely with ends that pivot to absorb shock from rocks, etc. The same width finish mower will have 3 lawn mower blades (at least they are similar to lawn mower blades) on it. Much smoother cut. It will also be hard to keep a 3 point bush hog from leaving grooves in your lawn from the frame or rear wheel.

If a pull behind BH was used slowly on pretty flat ground with sharp blades can do 70 % as well as a finish mower. The smaller it is the better. Lumpy ground, hills and ridges, small space to turn, and Not a chance. 3point will be less prone to following contours. JimN

My field gets cut 2 or 3 times a yar by one of my neighbors who cuts it for the hay. About a month after the first frost, I will go out with my bushhog and cut it a little closer that he does, maybe an inch or two lower. It doesnt look as good as my front yard, but it does look good, at say 6" so yes a bushhog can make it look good, but not near as good as a finish mower.

Yea a bush hog makes the 4 foot stuff look nice, but never the 6 inch stuff. You need a finish mower.

you are kidding, right?????

they make both brush hogs and finish mowers because they serve different purposes.

no brush hog will do an acceptable job as a "finish mower", bill

I don't think he was really kidding; I think he was trying to get good advice from folks who might know.
