My brother and I have added electric start to our 1927 Farmall Regular. We also installed an alternator. Non of this is origional equipment, and we know that. We are going to let you readers vote on whether we should install an ammeter, or a voltmeter, and give us your reason why.

VOLTMETER, Ammeter is fine, but requires shunting it between the alternator and the battery with heavy wire (10 ga). The voltmeter can be attached anywhere in the system with small gauge wire (16 ga). I would attach the voltmeter at the ignition switch so it will turn off when the key is turned off, if you even have a convential ignition switch setup. The plus to an ammeter is that when the tractor is not running the ammeter will not use current (drain). Keep the voltmeter between 12 and 14 and you are good. I gutted the ENTIRE wiring harness from my Farmall 504 and installed an alternator and voltmeter (had a meltdown...)

Both is ideal, but if only one I prefer a volt meter. You can even watch the voltage when cranking to tell how well your battery is doing. As others said You still have to know how to interpret what you are seeing.

I'm kinda curious as to how hard that was to do. I love the older Farmalls like yours and also the F series (that's right isn't it? F20, F30...) but I am more than a little scared of the hand crank situation. Was this a major conversion or is it fairly simple?

We used a ring gear from a Farmall M, on our belt pulley, and bolted a 560D starter to a plate, which we bolted to the frame rail, after aligning it with the ring gear. Our 14" belt pulley required a spacer ring, to make the ring gear fit. It takes some fabrication, but we are well pleased with the results. Really spins the Farmall over. We put a 7 inch pulley between the trany and the clutch housing, and mounted an alternator to the frame rail, right above the starter, with a belt between the two. We made a battery tray and mounted it to the other frame rail. Used a large 12 volt battery.

I vote for both, but if you can only have one, I'd rather have an ammeter than a voltmeter.

Either one will do the job, as long as the OPERATOR knows how to interpret what the meter is telling him.

BOTH would be even better.

And, the much maligned "idiot light" is OK, as well. You will notice a pattern as to what RPM the light goes out, and if that changes, it may indicate a loose belt, or an alternator that's beginning to fail BEFORE a "no charge" condition occurs.
