Has anyone seen or heard of a Heisler over-under drive for F-20"s. This would give you 12 speeds forward and 3 in reverse. I have two F-20"s with just overdrives 8 speeds, But have never seen a over-under. I had a man tell me he had a friend that had a over-under on an F-20. Is this fact or fiction? I put a overdrive in a F-20 that had the fast 3rd gear. When you put it in 3rd overdrive that tractor would run 25 MPH. That is a white knuckle ride on one of those old tractors I"m here to tell you.

I don't know for a fact, but I'd bet it is fiction. That would be an awful lot of extra gearing. But you never know, the list of home-made accessories for F20 is probably endless. I have an 8 speed Heisler too, and yes r4, they are a real overdrive that only works in any gear, including reverse.

I was raised on F-20's, Dad put overdrive on all of them, I have never heard of an under drive, Heisler used some willfit gearing to speed up the top shaft only, normally the gear shift had to be in nuetral prior to shifting to overdrive.9spds are geared different as they speed up the bottom shaft, If you could run in 3rd gear and overdrive at the same time you have something I have never seen.

r4etired,
What you are calling a overdrive is what's known as a roadgear, Yes they run off the top shaft and the tractor must be in neutral for those to work. The overdrives ran on the main shaft this was just like the 9 speeds only the F-20 was 4 speeds so it double the main shaft speed before the trans. in overdrive. A over-under would give you 4 speeds under direct drive, 4 In direct drive, and 4 speeds in overdrive. for a total of 12 speeds forward. The ones I have are overdrives this gives me the 4 direct or standard gears plus 4 more in overdrive for a total of 8 speeds. In overdrive it doubles the main shaft speed and the PTO speed. My tractor had a fast 3rd gear 12.5 mph and when shifting into overdrive it put it at 25 mph.

That's right Big. So with the OD "in" you get some wild pto and belt speeds too. I have heard that the Heisler could be reconfigured to go "under" only, but did not really believe it, and have never seen one.

Unforgiven,
I don't know if Heisler made that or not. But I took the one I have in the fast 3rd tractor and spun the gears 180 degees making it a under drive. It was unsafe in O/D 3rd I was afraid my Sons or Grandson would in up hurt or killed on it.
Spinning the gears was not easy, it required machine work and welding. So now 3rd is 12.5 and 6.25 mph, 1st is slow as old grandma. Makes a good tractor puller and great in slow races.
