I have Pertronix electronic ignition and am currently using a 6 volt positive ground system in my Farmall H and was wondering if I can change to a 8 volt battery with out doing any damage to the electronic ignition and coil beings it is a 6 volt system. I believe it will not do any damage to the rest of the electrical system such as the lights but am not sure about the ignition system.

I was taught that going to an 8 volt battery will not do any harm to the existing 6 volt electrical system period. It gives just a little more juice to get the motor turning over faster without doing any damage to the electical/ignition systems. Some say its even better for the starter because it doesn't turn over as much, keeping it cooler.

Mkirsck I do have the heavy cables and yes we do have a higher compression engine we have 3 9/19 in bore and with a 6 volt we can crank over easy enough but I think we lose enough volts that if the battery gets a little low the ignition does not want to fire like it should.

When you look in a light bulb cataloge you will see one column of 6-8 volt bulbs, next column 12-14 volt, JD parts books list the same 6-8 or 12-14.Most of the starters on M's and H's in the Delco parts book Clasify them as 6 or 12 volt

Why are you going to the 8-volt battery? Normally any starting problems are fixed with the right thickness cables and clean connections. If you've got 0 gauge cables, everything's clean, and you still have problems, the starter's probably going bad and an 8-volt battery will only get you a little more time before the starter goes completely.

A starter in good condition will take 12 Volts as long as you don't sit there and crank and crank and crank until it's smoking hot. Is this a souped up pulling engine you're trying to start? Maybe a 12 Volt conversion would be in order. An alternator and 12 Volt battery won't be much more than an 8 volt battery.

8 volts will be hard on both the generator and regulator. On standard point type ignition, the increased current flow will burn points without a resistor added. Better ask the manufacturer before you burn up your electronic unit.

6 volt lights will not last with 8 volt battery.

I put about 30,000 miles of nite driving on the old GMC truck after I converted it to 8 volt. Original lites were still shining britely when I got rid of it.

The original-style Pertronix Ignitor can only handle a certain current before "toasting". Increasing the system voltage will increase primary current. Adding some resistance to the primary circuit may be necessary, depending upon what the current is NOW.

Your best bet would be to call the "tech" folks at Pertronix, and see what the voltage and current limits are. (909) 599-5955
