I used an 8 volt in both my M and my H for years. However I converted them over to 12 about 3 years back. Main reason is that I had lots of trouble with the regulator keeping the battery charged. Also the batteries were getting expensive and hard to get.

Really like it now that I am using 12 volts and an alternator. The alternator always charges and the tractor is sure to start.

I use my tractor for farming 160 acres, so for me it is more of a functional thing. If you are doing it for a hobby and interested in keeping the tractor as original as possible, then go ahead and use and 8 volt. It keeps everything pretty much the same on your tractor but you still have a little extra starting boost when you need it.

I have 5 tractors with an 8 volt system, I started buying them when Interstate opened a warehouse about 10 miles form me, They are getting kinda pricey, I think the last one was 87 bucks,Normally they last about 4 years.
