I have a thesis paper to write in a history class that i am taking. The instructor of the class determines on what person the paper has to be on. Any way the area that I have is the industrial revolution in America. I am not pleased on the person that I got. So I told the professor why couldn’t I do Cyrus McCormick? After all he made one of the greatest inventions of all time, his reaper. I told the professor in all the 2 mins that I had that his invention was so great that the he was not grated a second term on his paten. The reason being that his invention was far to valuable to mankind, and it must be available for more mass production. Sooo I was told that if I could produce any journal or writings of the era that I could write my thesis on him. I know there are books on him, but i was wondering is there anyone that would know of a book or site that has period articles or journals on him?

Thanks

Andrew

A book by Cyrus McCormick, (son, grandson?) may help you also. The Century of The Reaper.

The link was given by the poster below, the Wisconsin Historical Society has Cyrus's original papers. I believe some of the letter press books have been microfilmed and might be available through interlibrary loan at your college library. The Society has hundreds of boxes of his papers, and even some of his underwear amongst other things. Not very much on the original invention of the reaper, but lots on the later development of the company.

Chicago Tribune has a database that your library might have that would include extensive amounts of articles.

The book "A Corporate Tragedy" has some good albeit brief info on cyrus mccormick and what he did to get started, family history, manage the business, expand, etc. About the first 40 pages of the book are solely on Cyrus. I got mine off ebay. Lots of good i believe cite-able info.

Go the old route and go to the library. Use their databse on books, and Pooles Periodical Index. Not everything is on Google. Maybe check Amazon for books on him. The Reaper. Then get your libary to get one on loan from somewhere. Genealogy websites for living family members and telephone interviews might get you some REAL personal information Nice to see a literate on the board. :) Good Luck, Gordo

Andrew, I remember a book I did a report on 50+ years ago, try to find "Wheat won't wait." Sorry I don't remember the author, but if it is still around I am sure you will like it. Good luck, Chuck

Being a graduate faculty member here is one piece of advice. Texts and historic documents are great. Do not use general readership magazines, or opinion, or Google references. (ever) Google will lead to good descriptors, not good writing. JimN PH.D.

Yup thats what iv learned Jim, sites you cant trust them, besides if you go and list a bunch of sites as a refrences not only will it be a poor paper but youll get laughed at too. My actuall major is Forestry (actually completed but doing extra classes for ed.) and theres was TONS of articles on that for writing papers, hope theres some on this!

Maybe i'm misunderstanding but why do you have to produce journals or articles from 100 years ago? I wouldve asked your professor if he had similar documentation readily available on the person he originally gave you...

I know recently the McCormick name has been sold by Case-IH, but some companies have information like that in their archives. You may try contacting Case-IH and see if they have any information for you. Also try an agricultural library, or your college library and do article searches. Even if your library doesn't have an article, usually you can get them through interlibrary loans. The librarians would be able to help with this. Google is good for a start but you should get some articles or biographies for additional resources.
