Hi all,

We're shopping for tractors in the 25 - 40 hp range with 3-point. Looking for something to compliment our Super A(which we cultivate with).

We're hoping to; bush hog, pull a transplanter, field cultivator, rolling harrow, etc. We're considering implements generally in the 4 - 6' range and perhaps weighing up to 1,000 pounds.

Do folks think a IH 404 is suited to this type of work?

Also for those with IH 404 experience...whats the scoop on these tractors? Strengths / weaknesses / etc. Are they easy to service and find parts for?

Anything else applicable and/or thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

Brian: 404 has got to be a great little tractor, basically SC through 240 chassis with a bit more engine, and factory 3 point hitch to boot. Also available for the 404 was a high-low two speed gear box in front of transmission, should give good speeds for trans planting. The down side of that high-low it also reduces PTO speed, but that shouldn't affect trans planting. Not sure a lot of the 404 actually had the high-low, it was an option.

I remember the farmall 404 as being easy to service. My IH 2404, the commercial version, is about the same. Parts are still available
from this web site and other sites. It is like a used car if you can find one in good shape you will be happy with it. Check the radiator for leaks around the base. Look for cracks where it bolts together at the torque tube. An added bonus would be the Hi Low option. The C135 is a great engine but I would want to do a compression check. I replaced the valve guides and valves in mine. Try to find one that has been well maintained. Good Luck! HughB

Forgot to add that the old boy I bought it from was using it to pull a planter, disc, Two bottom plow and a pretty good size bush hog. he had used it for about 35 years.
