It seems to be pretty good good on gas. does anyone know the average fuel consumption per hour? I believe the serial number is 5695 or 5965 Im not quite sure in know its a 5000 number. thanks Joe

The story I know about the 340's roots is this:

As IH progress through the letter series to the Super letter series to the '00 series to the '30/'50 series, a gap opened up in the line between the "C" class tractors and the "H" class tractors. The, Super C, 200, and 230 went essentially unchanged as far as horsepower. However, there was a HUGE jump in horsepower from the H to the Super H to the 300 to the 350.

In late 1958, IH was coming out with even more powerful larger tractors, the 460 and 560, but the planned 240 was still going to have the same horsepower as the 230/200/Super C. Thus the 340 was conceived to fill the gap.

Our new 340 (in 1958) Farmall consumed 2.5-3.0 gal/hr pulling a 3 bottom fast hitch mounted plow in clay/loam. Along with a 300 utility and Farmall H we farmed 300 acres, corn, wheat and soybeans. I still have the tractor. Its main purpose has been utility work the past 35 years and nostalgia as it was the first new tractor purchased.

IH brought out the 330 as an interim tractor prior to the 340, so technically it replaced the 330. It has the same engine as the 330, but IH was not yet ready to introduce the 340, thus the 330. The 330/350 preceded the 340, but the 460 replaced the 350. So, I consider the 340 a new model that really did not replace any particular model. 5000+ serials make it a 59 or 60 model, weighs around 4500 lbs. The C 135 engine is a small engine, an outgrowth of the C113-C123 engines in the A-240 so it shouldn't be a gas hog.
