I adjusted points to .020 today and now tractor runs great. the missing sound underload is not there. when i timed engine , i brought #1 up on compression but i did not move front pully WITH TIMING MARKS TO TDC. Should have i done that? or can you compensate by advancing / retard distributor. The points before i adjusted were so far off, cant believe it would start. how can points get that far off. Thanks Jim

Just did this on my 340U with an IH 2000 loader last month. What a pain.

The timing marks on my pulley are so faint they are almost not there. Is this common? I ended up guessing at the timing because I could not use the marks. Musta done something right because it runs great!

Just a general suggestion regarding timing marks:

Whenever I have the crankshaft pulley off any engine, it gets a new coat of paint. I put thin strips of contrasting colors at TDC and at whatever spot I'll use for timing. The timing mark(s) on the front of the engine get the same treatment. The Correct Police would probably string me up, but it makes it a lot easier to set the timing even in marginal lighting.

Points can get that far off by being in a hard-to-get-at place. If there is a loader on the 340, that makes it even worse. The neighbor's 300 with a loader was the most difficult to adjust points on [easier to remove the distributor]. It's easy to think that the points are on the high point of the cam, & have them off by a fraction.

The points are eroded by the electrical arc that occurs each time they open, thats why you found a large gap. Might have been better to replace points and condenser, but it sounds like you're happy with the way its running, so they probably have a little life left. It sounds like you must have removed the distributor. When reinstalling one, all you need to do to is get it timed close enough for the engine to start and run, but you really must check the timing at full throttle with a timing light, because the degree of advance at full throttle is the most critical setting. It's been awhile since I've had anything to do with a 340, but I think the flywheel has degree marks. If so, there should be a cover on the side of the clutch housing you can remove and a timing pionter underneath. Get yourself a I&T manual, find out how many degrees it should be advanced at full speed, locate that mark on the flywheel, and mark it with a white marker so it will show up under a timing light (liquid paper pens work great for this).
