I have a low serial # 51 Super C that has shutters. Is this common or rare? It is not set up for duel fuel and never was.

Teddy: I expect shutters were quite common, those new tractor buyers back then didn't completely trust thermostats. I remember my dad trading a 42 W4 dual fuel, (Hadn't burnt anything but gas since the war) for a new 51 H, straight gas with no shutters. I remember him raising the shutter issue with the dealer. Adding shutters was quite expensive. He growled for awhile, used partial grill coverings, etc., that he was constantly adjusting. By the time he bought the new 300 in 55, he had learned to trust the thermostat. Sometimes old ideas die hard.

If it is a All Fuel tractor, it was standard, if it is a Gasoline tractor, it was optional, or someone may have added it on later.

Andy.

They were standard on distillate/kerosene tractors but were an optional extra on gasoline tractors.

My '51 has them, too. No signs of ever having been dual-fuel. Came out of the Catskills. Just figured somebody (dealer or customer) ordered it as an option for a quicker warm-up. I've used them pretty regularly in the Catskills and here in Maine when it's cold out, just because I don't like short, cold runs -- would rather have her warm up good when I do run her.
