Timing questions on a Farmall H

I have a '48 farmall h and it runs like a top. The engine was rebuilt from top to bottom two years ago and I set the timing on the mag with the little marks on the front pulley. The tractor has tons of power and is very reliable. However, about a month ago, the electric starter bit the dust, so I've been starting the tractor with the hand crank. It starts eventually, but I have to throw the crank about 10 - 15 times to get her to start. With the starter it only rolled over about 3 times before it fired up. Is this normal or is something slightly out of whack? Thanks for the help!!

thanks Andrew. I have about 60 -70 hours on the engine, and the mag is HOT! I had it checked by the local "magneto guy" and he said that it was as hot as it would have been if it was rebuilt by him. Like I said in the earlier post, the thing runs like a bear, but its a son of a banana peeler to start by hand.

one thing to that it might be is that the impuse coupling is going in the mag and not producing a good hot spark, and or the impluse is set wrong.

also..

I know people are not going to think this is ture, but... i had this problem with a Allis B. I rebuilt the enine top to bottom, and i had the mag rebuilt etc.... and i tell you that engine would not start with the hand crank to say its self. This was a problem since this was a hand start only lol. Anyway i would ask how many hours you have on the engine? my didnt want to start good with the hand crank untill i had over 25 to 50 hours on the engine. Now it starts good with the crank. Just something to think about..
