F-4 mag on f-12 tractor, Will crank but runs in a bind. Just barely will pull itself, just rebuilt engine so compression is good. Could weak fire cause it to run that sluggish. I have the rotor marks lined up, new points, and condensor but the fire does'nt impress me that much. Can it be strong enough to run but not pull. Thanks for any help, Ken.

To answer your question, yes, but at the same time, if its that weak, it proabably isnt going to run at all. Take off the magnet, try to stick it to the frame rail. Does it hold, if so its fine. I suppose the coil could be the culprit, but again, if its that it most likely wont run at all, or skip. It does sound to me like there is a problem in the governor, or possibly, the advance on the mag, but mine does just fine no matter where its set, but does sound like the engine is laboring more when the advance is in the retarded position ,but will pull it self fine.

I think i may have found the problem, on the end of the rotor the lobe that opens the points was not in the right place, it had turned enough the points where already opened and was about half to closing when TDC came up. I thought the lobe was made on the shaft, but it is not. Will turn to where the points are just opening at TDC and see what happens. Thanks for all the help, Ken

52, Do you have full range of trottle when parked and not under load? if so the govener should be free and ok, if not the govener bearing that slides on the fork its stuck. I still say if you have spark you should be ok. my tractor will run at tdc and 4 hole advanced. So if you wont run just past tdc something is off more than you think. oldiron29

Is the governor working? Take off the cover next to the carb and watch & see if it opens the throttle when you put a load on it. Did you adjust the valves after you had it warmed up?

I would check the magnets as Tom sugeested. They're sometimes overlooked. Touch them with a flatblade screwdriver. They should attract that screwdriver with a lot of effort. Here's a pic
of an old garden tractor mag with the magnets being checked. Hal

The govenor is working, it seems to me it is out of time. I have moved the mag bolt in several places but it never gets right. The tdc no. one cylinder with rotor pointing at no. one plug will not start. It has to be moved two to three holes to get started. Mag drive gear and crank are lined up. I'll keep trying, thanks for the help, ken.

Tom, I would recheck the timing if it is off you will have no power. If timing is correct. than change coil in mag. Not only the mag timing but the TDC you may have to move the timeing disc one hole.If you have spark week or not and it runs on all 4 you should be ok. If spark was that bad you would fowl plug or have missing. oldiorn29

Have you checked the magnet? A weak magnet will produce weak spark. Also, the coil should be checked. A rebuild of the F4 should include a mag recharge. Also, did this run fine prior to the engine rebuild.
IMHO.
