I'm replacing the timing gears on a Super C as they are pretty close to having chewed themselves to pieces. Does anyone know if I can remove the crank gear and cam gear without removing either shaft? If so how should I go about it? Many thanks, tractorsam

Here's how you should align the timing gear and crankshaft gear before removing them. This will keep your valve timing in time and your ignition in time. Hal
PS: Read the print along the edge.

You can remove both, but its going to involve a lot of work. You need to drain the cooling system, remove the complete front end assy, fan assy, and the water pump on the Super C. You really need a good shop manual. You probably need to remove the grille and radiator. Once all this has been removed you need to remove the timing gear cover. I would rotate the gears until the timing marks are aligned with the woodruff key to your left. Remove the rocker arms and push the cam follows (lifters) up enough to clear the cam lobes then remove camshaft and have the old gear pressed off and the new gear pressed on. Use a suitable puller to pull the crankshaft gear. Don't move the engine after these are removed. You may need to make or have one made like Bigdog made for his Cub using a bottle jack or hydraulic ram. You need a bearing separator too so you don't break the gear. I would take pictures and make a lot of notes. Hal
PS: Pic of puller.

Many thanks for the reply. I already have everything apart, I'm just looking at the space behind the crank gear (more or less non-existant). I don't really have a problem with pulling everything apart, was just hoping to avoid the extra work as I haven't got a suitable hoist for removing the engine to change the gear on the crank. Just wondered if anyone had managed to pull it without removing the crank. Spent all day making up a puller to remove that front pulley and managed to do it with scrap metal I had lying on the floor. Many thanks, tractorsam

I think you can pull that crank gear. It may take some effort. I wouldn't pull the crankshaft.
You would need to completely disassemble the engine to remove it. Rent or borrow a 3 -legged heavy duty puller and try it. Hal

here is what the bearing splitter looks like. you can hook a puller to it to remove the gear.

Sorry all, just re-read my posts and realised that I hadn't quite managed to say what I was trying to. At the moment the engine is still in the tractor and I was hoping to pull the gear off with the crank still in the block. By the looks of that bearing splitter I'm going to need to pull the engine though. Many thanks, tractorsam

You don't need to pull the engine to remove the pulley. Hal
