I know I'm tiring the board and sure wish i could talk to the Tractor Vet(As he seems to know a lot about he 56 models). But I'm sure others have had similar experiences.

It seems that I was hood winked on this buy. After having the tractor for about 2 weeks and driving her some, the oil started dripping out the weep hole under the center compartment and near the hyd filter. Question: If you pull the first cover "underneath" coming from the rear housing(sets almost under the TA and is approx 12 " long, wider on end toward rear than toward front of tractor) should oil be in that area? There is so much oil around, i don't know what covers are supposed to contain oil and what doesn't. There are two inspection covers underneath the TA on the bottom of the center housing. Thanks Jerry

PS The I&T manuel is more concerned about Hyd drive that explaining some simple features. Can't find a thing on internal seal replacement on PTO shaft or TA shaft.

T Vet's advice is 90% of the time on the large frame models with hydraulic actuated TAs. The 656/666/686 is mechanical, like a 300, 400, 350, 450, 460, 560, super mta. while his advice, often from memory, is good and correct, he has said a couple times that for those smaller models (even a 656) he would have to check the book for sure. make sure when you're checking the archives that the tractor being referred to has a mechanical TA if you want to go by that info. my advice is to go by the tips you get from your current posts, as many of the other guys here are just as qualified as T V yet their specialty will be your 656.

Thanks karl

I would like to have a better step by step instructions than I&T when we begin. But my man works on transmissions every day and some on large trucks, etc. With instructions to follow, I think we will do OK, but it sure is a first for us both. I'm putting in a new clutch and pressure plate with throw out bearings and other while in there, which is just about standard on all IH stick shifts. But the TA is different. TA works good, just has a weep leak somewhere.

Thanks again

The PTO gears and the T.A. run in oil. Most of it is splash lube but some oil but some does come down from above for the T.A. The best way to fix your problem is to drop the T.A. housing and put in all the seals. You can replace the PTO drive seal with just splitting the tractor behind the engine but the drive shaft is hard to get out unless you have worked on the unit before. I would suggest removeing unit and going through it like the book says

Again Thanks so much. The man that is actually going to do it is a top notch and works on Transmissions every day. Maybe with the info I have gathered from you and a I&T manuel we will figure it out. I hate to keep asking but if it is the TA seals, Are you talking about the ones on the TA assembly itself? Tractor Vet mentioned that the Nut that holds the flywheel to the TA assembly might have worked loose and is causing some leakage. It's going to be a new one on me. Wish you were here to advise us. LOL Thanks again for your unpaid help.

Read back over your letter. Miss read it. The cover in the front of the T.A. housing that has all the bolts in it is holding in oil. the cover at the back of the housing that is shaped like the letter T also has oli in in

That carpment should be dry. Oil is leaking from around the pto drive shaft. Could also be leaking from the Ta. sun gear shaft or the T.A. Carrier. Would need to split ther tractor if any of the seals leak. If not leaking bad clean the hole out and let it drip

Thanks. You are right. They do hold oil. At least there was a bunch tried to come out when I loosend the bolts. One more question if I may. Does the TA pump oil up from this same area and run in oil? I have a mechanic who is top notch in All kinds of equipment that is going to help me (I am about a 5 or 6 on a scale of 10) He is about a 10 on tramissions for trucks and cars, disel engines, and motors, etc. But he has not done a TA seal replacement yet.I'm trying to find out all I can and get all the info to tell him before we tear her apart. I need to know all the "Make Sures" if possible. I don't know if the TA will have to be pulled if it just has the Retaining nut loose and the oil is actually coming from the pto shaft seal. Like I say, the I&T is sure lacking on some of this seal replacement stuff.
Thanks Again Jerry
