Farmall A head questions

Hi guys, i usually hang out over on the green side of the board but my father had a few farmall questions so here i am. I have an A sitting in the garage awaiting some work. Was originally taken apart about 10 years ago due to a few sticky valves. Been in the garage taking up space for a while now. So here go the questions. This tractor hasn"t had anything done to the head ever and i was wondering what i will need to do in order to eliminate the need to use the additive and just run straight gas. I do believe i heard something about hardened valve seats or something?? Next question. I found a super A head online in great shape, will it fit and am i in any better position than if i had the original head redone somewhere? Just looking for some opinions on what you would do if in the same situation. Tractor really shouldn"t have to work much once it"s back together. Just the occasional odd job here and there.
Thanks for your time.
Scott

if your head isnt cracked, i would just have that one rebuilt. they sell the complete valve overhaul kit on this site for right around 100.00. comes with new valves, guides, springs, keeper ect. you may not need the entire kit if your valves are good and just need reconditioning. see if you have a machine shop nearby that can look at the head and give you a price.

Ok well heres some more info so perhaps someone with more knowledge will chime in. Super A head has " 6716DB" in raised letters. Not entirely sure what it would cost to have the original head redone, so i'll keep an eye on this one just in case. Thanks for the input so far.

Thats what i was thinking, some new valve guides should fix the sticking and a quick once over to make sure everything is in spec and back together she goes. Just out of curiosity would the super A head i mentioned fit???

You are going to have to find someone on this forum more qualified than me to answer that question. There are several A heads and several Super A heads. Some are gasoline, some are kerosene, some distillate. There are also heads which are differentiated by serial number ranges for both the A and the Super A. No doubt, most will work; some may not. Or, they may work but give lower performance. If the cost of re-doing your original head is in the ballpark with buying the other head, I'd just stick with what is original to the tractor. mike

The heads are all the same. Just where did you get your info that different heads were used. Now there were different pistons used for fuel and altitude. The kero ones had a big dimple in the top then theres the regular flat top then two different domes on altitude ones but the same head it used on all.

Hi, Gene: I went to the case/IH website partslist and saw all the different numbers for the various head castings and serial number ranges (for both the A and the Super A heads). Numbers like 9052DYA, 9052DXA and 57481DB for the A; Numbers like 356299R1, 366299R12 and 355046R2 for the Super A. Maybe it is wrong? Anyway, that is why I told him he needed someone else to help him with that question as I have never had to swap heads. Thanks for stepping in.

I just tore down two dual fuel engines and the head were the same and also one that was a hi-alt one it had the hi-dome pistons not very high domes so it must have been a 5000 one the other two had low dimples in the pistons but had the same # on the heads one even had original bearings dated and were std size and hardly no wear on the crank mains and rods. i will get it polished and use it as the tractor will only get hardly any use. The amazing thing was the oil still in the bngs but the blocks were full of junk. They still had the disstillate manifolds. The one had never been apart as you can tell on the locks on the mains and the cotter pins. The code dates on the bngs went along with the cast code on the engine they were CLEVLITE. My BN came fron COLO and had the 5000 pistons as the dome isnt very high. Often wondered what the higher domes would look like as there were four different styles. Some day im going to remove the head on the B i have that was cast in FEB 47 and has a hy pump with C rockshaft assy. The block has SAMPLE in raised letters in front of the filter. Looking in spark plug hole it has hi-dome pistons. Very unusual tractor.

I wouldn't worry about any hardened valve seats nor any gas additive. These old Farmalls seem to do just fine without them - especially in your case where you noted it will not be doing any hard work to speak of. Now, if you were plowing from dawn to dark for days and days, then maybe hardened seats would be in order. Just have the head freshened and go with it.
