Does anyone know if IH stamped the connecting rod caps on M Farmalls with positon numbers during or prior to factory assembly?

I expected to see the caps stamped 1 through 4 on our 1950 M as the previous owner told me that it had been rebuilt with M&W parts to to SM specs. I just R&R the pan on our '46 M dual fuel X-5 (4" Cylinders) for inspection too and it also had the rod caps stamped with corresponding position numbers.

My friend's dad bought the '46 used but he didn't think it had ever been rebuilt. Just curious if the '46 was rebuilt or torn down too.
Cheers Don

Nope,

Manufactures have absolutely no reason to stamp.

If you find stamp marks, someone has already been in there.

I've got a Hydro 70 that has 3 #5 rods. :>)

I have pulled 2 M engines down and neither one were marked, other than parts numbers. But the I-4 engine that I know was untouched factory parts had been marked, but I dought it was done before everything was put together.

Yes all rod caps as well a the rods were stamped for identification. they were stamped after final machine work. On IH engines stamped side is the cam side.
