I have a transmission cover gasket that has shrunk so the holes don't line up. Is the gasket any good?

Should I just use some gasket sealer instead of the gasket?

Randy

When I put the cover back on my H I had to soak the gasket. It only took about 10 minutes in the sink. When all the holes line up it is done. It was still damp when I put it on and did not use any sealer. The tub was freezing cold and the gasket stuck to it...

It sounds like the gasket you have has been in stock for a long time. Those large paper gaskets dry out over time and shrink. I have just sprayed water on them and let them set for a day or so to get the moisture back into them. Then they will grow to the correct size. I have always had these gaskets fit if this procedure is followed. In fact, I have a PTO gasket for my 350 that I need to wet before installing as it has shrunk. I just recently bought the transmission cover gasket for my 350 and it was on a plastic wrapped cardboard sheet. It fit perfectly. Roger

Be careful letting to much squeeze out to the inside of the transmission. Pieces can come off and plug oil holes to the reverse idler gear and the bearing on the input shaft.
I have went back to using the gasket. If it has shrunk soaking it in water should work.

Use penty of gasket maker under the portion where the belt pulley mounts,I have had them leak there, you can easly clean off the inside and outside of that portion if it sqeezes out.Parts guys will tell you it will screw up the shifters if you don't have a gasket but I have never had a problem.

I dought it shrunk, it probably wasnt right to start with. I quit using those tranny cover gaskets when after 5 attempts to get one that would line up. I just use the silicon, drop the top on and forget about it. Easier to clean up if you have to remove it again for any reason.

Still have 2 ½ dowel pins Bob after breaking one off :x
Will try the soaking trick first, if that doesn't work with use silicone.

Randy - I've had excellent luck substituting red Locktite silicone "gasket maker" for traditional gaskets on things like oil pans, rocker boxes, timing gear covers, etc. on my tractors. Don't see any reason why it would not work for the tranny cover too.

Only thing I would suggest is if there are NOT dowel pins to locate/guide the cover as it's lowered into place, make yourself a couple by cutting the heads off the right size bolts and screwing 'em temporarily into the tranny. Otherise you risk "smearing" the uncured silicone when positioning the cover and possibly ending up with a leak.

Do you put it on wet then?

Yep, you lay a bead of silicone down, and before it dries you lower the deck on....makes a heck of a seal too.

I think you an soak them in water to get them to retain their original shape and size.
