I started having problems with my SC starter making a grinding noise and not want to turn the tractor over. After a few tries the starter would turn the tractor over and start ok. I pulled the starter and found the gear ends on the starter about gound and flattened. Anybody have any ideas what would cause this? Starter not spinning out and catching all the way maybe? Ring gear has some wear but looks pretty good. I have ordered another starter for the tractor. Will try to post a picture of the starter. Thanks Terry third party image

If it makes a grinding noise the teeth on the flywheel are bad in that spot. Now you can take the crank and turn the engine over a little before starting and then you will have the starter meshing on good teeth. You can also when you stop the engine just turn the engine over a little with the crank then the starter will be on good teeth when you use the starter again. Its that or splitting and reversing the ring gear or just replacing it. Use a torch and it will remove easy and same for installing. Then you need a good bendix on your starter to mesh with the good teeth on the new ring gear. I would get a new starter for the guy on E-BAY he is located in SOUTHERN MINN and has brand new starters for 130 to your front door that way you have a new bendix also one yr warranty can go wrong i have used them and they are great.

Some of the problem is probably also on the ring gear. Those engines have a tendency to stop in the same spot in the rotation. The teeth on the ring gear get worn down. My Super C is pretty bad. They say that you can split the tractor and rotate the ring gear on the flywheel. I guess if I had it apart that I would look at putting in a new ring gear. But then this one has lasted for 50+ years.

Any decent repair shop should be able to replace that gear, without you having to buy another starter. I'd say hit the yellow pages, and see if you can find somebody.

I never knew that them Farmalls stopped at the same spot they started from, that could explain it alright. All them years of starting in the same place would have to be hard on the ring gear. I think I will go with a new starter, I might as well make sure the starter is engaging all the way, no use putting a weak starter on. I was tempted to get the gear replaced on the starter but why spend the money on a gear and labour if something else is wrong with the starter. I would see about that guy on ebay but I am in Canada and from any prices I have seen then shipping ontop I can't save any money. At the local tractor supply company a new starter is $189.00. I need the tractor right now for pushing snow, boy we have been getting a lot of snow lol. Sounds like come spring it will be time to look forward to splitting the tractor and putting a new ring gear on. Might have a question or 2 then.
Thanks for everybodys help Terry
