Update: My 140 lost power....

Thanks to all for their input. I'll put a new coil on, take off the distributor and clean and lubricate, then see if it works right. If not, THEN I'll have to cut off the muffler to get the hood off, and can then pull the valve cover to check the valves.

I'm thinking that I burned up the hydraulic pump since I've run it for weeks with the control lever in the full upright position and never had any problems, then a couple of days ago the blade started dropping on it's own and wouldn't stay up. Lesson learned.

Thanks folks!!

Dave

If the lever drops along with the hydraulic (hitch, 3 pt, front hitch) you may just need to tighten the friction adjustment. If you lift it up and the hitch tops out before the lever, don't raise the lever as far. Sure it's getting enough gas? Under load it needs more gas.

Keep us posted and good luck.

Okay, time to sound stupid. Where is the friction adjustment located?? Also, attached to the hitch hydraulic rocker arm, is a long bolt with a huge spring. It only seems to engage when the arm is in the up position. Am I assuming correctly that this is just to keep it from slamming into the full upright position? Because the bolt was backed out to the point that the spring never engaged. Thanks.

Dave: The friction pads are in the pivot of the lever itself, they are spring loaded and designed to keep the lever where you put it.

The big spring you refer to is a compression lift assist for fast hitch. The bolt you refer to that goes in the end of the spring is not a tightening device but must be adjusted so the head hits the brace as hitch reaches full height or rochshaft is in it's forward position. When the hitch is all the way down that bolt will stick out about 4". It does two functions, keeps the compression spring straight and acts as limiter so hitch cant force rockshaft beyond it's forward limit. If that big bolt in the end of the big spring is out of adjustment, particularly if it's screwed in to far and not allowing rockshaft to go it's limit, this will create full time demand on hydraulic system when you try and raise the hitch to full height.

You really need a manual for this tractor, original IH operator's manual is important, as well as a manual covering the hitch. If you had the manual, you questions on here would become much clearer for us. Some of our problems with your threads are caused by your use of terminology.

Hugh, thanks for the reply and contructive criticism. I have an "owners manual", but not a repair manual. And to be honest, I've been using only those parts of the manual that relate to the ignition and valves that I'm currently dealing with. I realize that the words I use invoke certain images in my mind, but do not necessarily invoke the same images in the minds of others. Thank you for your patience and help.
