I recently purchased a 784 diesel & talked to a couple of dealers who recomend running 15w-40 motor oil in it for my light use of the tractor. Should I run the Case brand or is their another brand of oil that will do the same or more???

In the owners manuel for a IH 464d it says not to use a multi-viscocity oil. I use a straight 30 wght. in Rotella. I live in central NC, so pretty mild and little use in winter. Any ideas?

Thank you,

Years ago the warning was reasonable. Today oils are a primary reason for engines lasting 3 to 4 times longer. That and far fewer metallic additives in the fuel. JimN

You can't just grab a 15w40 oil. It needs to be for diesel engine service.

Delo 400 has a little bit of Moly in it, something like 100ppm. I don't think the others have that.

Hi, the engine oil depends on your local climate.
Summer 15W-40 is good but if you live in an area where it gets below 0F for long periods of time and you are running he tractor everyday then 5w-30 would be better for cold starts.

ESSO HD is also good Diesel engine oil.

All the major brands are fine. Some favorite are Delo, Rotella, Mobil, and Kendall. JimN
