just drained oil out of the pan. lots of neglect. pulled top off of filter housing. its cracked. inside of housing is full of black goo(oil). drain pipe off of housing is pluged up. want to clean all that crap out. i know that whatever i put in there will also go into oil pan. thinking of pouring kero in and letting it sit for awhile. good idea?

I think the others have set you on the right track with the sludge issue.
The oil filter housing cap came in 2 styles. The early ones were pot metal and cracked from over-tightening. The later ones were stamped steel and resisted cracking but will warp easily if over-tightened. When you get a replacement, make sure you re-install with both the lip gasket and the center sealing washer between the cap and the stud or it will still leak.

I agree with dropping the pan and cleaning everything. The oil filters only filter a small percentage of the oil the engine pumps. It doesn"t filter all of it going to the bearings.

Drop the oil pan and clean it out, you don't want what is in there circulating through the engine! Use detergent oil, as soon as it darkens, change again. Watch that oil pressure.

Kerosene to clean up the oil filter drain plug and oil filter housing won"t hurt. Be sure to let the kerosene drain out of the oil pan. There is an orifice in the bottom of the oil filter housing - kerosene will drain into the oil pan.

The oil filter drain pipe unscrews (actually a plumbing part - a nipple). Suggest unscrewing the nipple and putting it in the parts washer.
