Super-A ring gear

Maybe I'm not doing the 'archive' thing right. I did try to look.

I'm thinking to turning my ring gear around on my flywheel while I have it out, because some of the gear-edges on the starter side are bunged up. So two questions-

One side has..what? Lead-in ramps? Is it reasonable to turn it around if the other side doesn't?

And can it just be driven off with a cold chisel and hammer? I have no heat other than a Do-It Center hand-held propane. No ridges or lips it sits on or against? I know it'll need to go in the oven to get back on. (When the wife isn't home).

new ring gear at case i/h dealer was $28.00 last year for my farmall a ps dont use a hammer and chisel it will break the lip on your flywheel i found out the hard way kevin

There are no ridges just heat and it will fall off. If you dont have a torch just take it to some one who does and yes you can reverse it and put back on it will last for years or get a new one. You dont need the beveled teeth as new ones i have used dont have the bevel.

If memory serves me right, you cannot remove the ring gear because of a small lip on the flywheel. Trying to drive the ring gear off, will break the lip.
The normal procedure is to cut through the ring gear with a hack saw until you touch the flywheel. Then drive a chisel into the cut to break the ring gear. This allows safe removal. The new ring gear must be heated gently and evenly and then slipped into place. After cooling, it is a tight fit.

I bought a new one at NAPA couple years ago for around $30 and the machine shop took off the old one and installed the new one for a few dollars more.

Wasn't worth it to mess around reusing the old one, in my opinion.

A couple comments:

1 - A propane torch may be sufficient to heat and remove the ring gear. (I've done it using a pair of propane torches working together).

Lay the flywheel on the floor supported by a couple bricks or similar. Then set your torch (or torches) as high as it will go and play the flame evenly around the ring gear. When heated to around 350 deg or so the gear should fall right off the flywheel - no pounding required.

2 - If you've gone to all the trouble to split the tractor and remove the ring gear why not replace the worn gear with a NEW one? (The new ring gear for my Super H cost $38 - I gotta think a new Super A gear will be comparable...)

Pete: I'd go with Bob and gene, you don't need a lot of heat, certainly don't want it red hot. Last one I did, I didn't even remove the flywheel, just a couple of good welders gloves, cleaned it and turned it before I lost all the heat. I did warm it some before reinstalling. 15 years ago and it's still going.
