I have a quick question about the transmission on the IH 786. It has the hi-low-reverse range lever, and then the four gears on the other lever. Can you shift on the move (using the clutch) between the ranges?

I've got the manual, but it doesn't say one way or the other.

HIGH TO LOW TO REVERSE,make sure you are stopped,1-4 you can shift one the move,if everything is adjusted to sepcs, which most are not,you will grind some gears. i dont use the clutch shifting between 1-4 on my 1466 or my neighbors 786-1086-1486, drive it like a semi

That is the same classic "crash" style gearbox as the original 706. You can shift on the fly if you're good at double-clutching.

Only the 5x88 series tractors had synchromesh gearboxes.

Thanks.

I assume that goes for the range and the speeds? Meaning you can't shift from high-to-low range or from 2-to-3 (in the same range)?

Oh let's see how many of these transmissions I have shifted: 706, 886, 1066, 1206, 1466. I have many hours on all of these tractors. If the linkage is worn at all these transmissions have a habit of getting into two gears at the same time, at which time you will stop and manually unjam the linkage with a hammer and scredriver (tractor has to be shut off). These transmissions are not meant to be shifted on the fly since all of these models had a T/A. You can upshift in same range sometimes but down-shifting or changing ranges just won't work. I use 2nd gear a lot for pulling wagons and errands. L2 for control, H2 5 - 10 MPH is a good barnyard and across field speed, and reverse in 2nd is not too fast. That way I am only shifting one lever most of the time and then into H3 or H4 for moving down the road. For comparison L4 is the normal "field work" gear for pulling planters and tillage equipment. In the old days we use to plow in L3.

Thanks for much for the help. I knew about the TA operation, I just wasn"t sure about the rest of the transmission.

The transmission is not synchronized so their will be grinding of the gears between ranges.
