Wrong Diode I guess

Well, I've read evrything posted about putting a diode in the exciter line on an alternator to stop back feeding and running down the battery. Rat Shack didn't have an IN5408, but did have an IN 5400 soooo I got that one. any way I don't think it's working. With the ignition off, there is a slight deflection to the right side of the ammeter when I pull the plug out of the alternator .Everything else seems OK, it runs and charges . Is the diode # that critical??

Aha, looks like I have the right end of the diode towards the alternator anyway, but the wire may be to the wrong side of the ignition switch. Thanks to youall, I'll look at it again tomorrow.

Short answer: No. Diodes rarely fail unless abused, the one you got should work OK.
Your diode wire needs to be connected to an on/off switch which removes battery power when the tractor is shut down. From your description, sounds like yours may be connected direct to a battery source rather than to the ignition switch 'ON' terminal (should be same terminal that feeds the ignition coil circuit).

When the diode wire is connected correctly to the ignition switch 'ON' terminal the tractor would likely run-on when the switch is shut off IF the diode is shorted, but the alternator would charge normally. If the diode is open or connected reversed, then the alternator would not start charging at low RPM's (if at all).

TW, just about any diode rated more then a few amps (I like at least 5) with a PIV of 50 to 100 or even over volts will work fine TO PREVENT RUN ON WHEN THE IGNITION IS OFF VIA ALTERNATOR BACKFEED..... ....

NOTE That diode or a resistor (which I recommend n use) is NOT to prevent battery discharge like it sounds like you may be thinking buttttt tttt it can make the engine stop when you switch off the ignition since if its not there the coil can get a back voltage feed from the alternator n keep running even with ignition OFF..... .

NOTE to work as a backfeed preventer it must be wired negative end towards alternator.

NOTE Theres NOTHING wrong whatsoever with using a diode to prevent run on, Ive done it n seen em used for years NEVER any problem, there is like a 0.6 voltage drop across them

However being conservative n believing an ounce of prevention is better then a pound of cure n also thinking its better to be safe then sorry n based on some GM literature Ive read plus a GM engineers advice, I use n highly recommend a 10 ohm or more safety current limiting resistor be used in lieu of or in addition to (no problem with BOTH) a diode n in cases Ive observed with the resistor the diode isnt even required !!!!! !!!!

When an idiot light is used instead of a diode or a resistor its resistrance is likely wayyyyy yyyyy more then 10 ohms anyway (even more safety current limiting then a 10 ohm resistor) yet THE ALTERNATOR STILL WORKS FINE WITH NO DIODE AT ALLL since the idiot light or the current limiting safety resistor I use absorbs enough energy so run on doesnt occur when the ignition is OFF

BOTTOM LINE

THERES NOTHING WRONG WITH A DIODE ONLY

BUTTTTT AN IDIOT LIGHT OR A SERIES RESISTOR CAN ADD SOME CURRENT LIMITING AS A SAFETY FACTOR WHICH CANT HURT NOTHING PROVIDED ITS NOT SO MUCH RESISTNCE SHE CANT EXCITE AT ALL LOL

THERES ALSO NOTHING WRONG WITH USE OF A RESISTOR OR AN IDIOT LIGHT

Its your tractor and YOUR CHOICE and either a diode alone or the added safety of some degree of current limiting provided by a resistor ar an idiot light WILL EITHER OR EVEN BOTH WORK FINE..... .

Hope this helps yall understand the whole alternator excitation n resistor n diode thing a bit better. I believe Bob has some great alternator internal wiring diagrams which may help even more

276-1161 should work. Stripe toward Alt.

I bought several and used the biggest one but forgot the #.

Twheat: Both 1n5400 and 1n5408 are 3A but the 5408 is 1000piv and 5400 is only 50piv. May want to keep that in mind later on if this one fries. .agpilot

As Old indicates, if it is in backwards it will do that. 50-50 chance unless you put it in correctly in the first place.
An old diode from a junk alternator will also work. They are in packs of 3 or 6 in a heatsink. Just attach the case to one lead, and the center lead to the other. Most of the alternator diodes are not marked, so it must conduct toward the alternator, and not conduct away from it. JimN

I use radio shack part # 276-1661. If wired right it will work just fine if wired back wards it will cause problems. The white line goes to the alternator
