Now I've head both side and I just want to hear what everybody else thinks. Which is better new 15.5 38 tires or wore down 15.5 38 tires. The reason I ask is I'm trying to set up my 53' Super M for pulling and I'm going back and forth new tire or old tire.

Old tires are almost always better. Find some that are old enough to be hard as this reduces flexing of the lugs and makes them bite harder. 50% tread is about right for all purpose pulling. Too tall of tread bar will pull dirt up and will pile up in front of sled making it harder to pull. A lot depends on track conditions.

easiest conversion is to get a set of cast hubs from a 450-560 IH. Get a set of rims off a JD,, or IH whatever,, but youll have better luck finding a 14 inch rim,, dont have to do any welding or cutting, nice set up too! I run em on a 50 M we pull with. 15.5X38 tires, have good luck with em bout 40% tread, they do grab a bite. Hope this helps, Chad

It is not always that the new one is "better", my Dad put new 15-5-38's on his SMTA and the old ones actually gripped better. The rims need to be wider to use 15-5-38's and the new tires might grip better.

I bought my M and the guy I bought it from put old tires on it. He had several tractors he pulled. He told me that old ones that have been driven on the road and are worn down are better because when you start slipping they don't dig as fast. You can get a little more distance with the old tire because they dont stop you. These are my tires. The front edge sticks up and gives it bite but not too much.

Scotty,It depends what type of tractor your pulling, new tires are better if your pulling stock or any thing close,If your turning your tires at a fast speed such as modified tractors with wheel speeds over 100mph good tread will dig holes. This is why they will take new tires and cut the tread

Put a old one on one side and a new one on the other side and start pulling, see which one spins and won't grip. Use the best ones.

Where could I find a good set of old 15.5 tires? I'm in Oxford, Oh. I also realize I should go with at least 14" rims to flatten out the top of the tire. As for what I'm going to pull in just stock Antique class.

You might call a few local tire stores, I have done that a couple times and actually found decent tires. It is all just a matter of luck and timing.
