Help Identify Model - Farmall H Sickle Mower

Hey guys,
I have a IHC Sickle mower for my 1943 Farmall H. I may do some restoration
on it next spring. Me and my Dad used it a few years ago and it worked good. My question is, what model do you think it is? It has IHC in some of the parts.
I posted a photo in the Implement Photos a while back and someone said
it looked like a McCormick 27V. What model do you think it might be? Let me know
if you need more pictures, if you do, I'll need to take them and brush all the snow
off it. It was originally a manual lift, but someone added a hydraulic cylinder instaed.

Andy, the 25V used a cultivator cylinder mounted under the right side of the transmission,rear end on the tractor with a mounting bracket and device bolted into the side of the clutch/power lift housing and drawbar and a chain ran to the pull-up pivot on the mower to lift it. We had a 25V we used on our '50 H back in the early '50's when I was growing up on the farm and it was one fine mowing outfit. If the hay was heavy 1st cutting I mowed in 3rd @ 95% throttle. Most second and third cutting and straw stubble I could mow in 4th @ 85-90% throttle. Those Z shaped plates on the mounts were used so you could use the mower without narrowing up the rear wheels on your tractor...you usually had them spread out at that time of year for cultivating. Used to love spinning the steering wheel with a little right brake to make nice square corners with just a little "tuft" of hay left standing. Usta "knock down" a field of hay pretty quick. Mowin' straw was "bumble-bee city"...got stung a couple of times. Funny, I can't remember where I left my keys this morning but I can remember mowing hay like it was yesterday.

I may be wrong, but I think those brackets are on there so it can mount on the H without removing the swinging drawbar. Both brackets are different.

Andy,
It looks to be a 25V, the 27V uses a hydralic cylinder on the mower, the 25V uses a lift cylinder mounted on the side of tractor and used a chain to lift it. I think I have a manual for a 25V if you want, I could copy and mail/email it to you.

The 27V for our SC has a square frame as opposed to the triangular frame on the pictured mower. Our 27V also has mounting brackets which attach to the axle housings -- not to the drawbar as shown on these mowers.

If it attaches to the axle it was probably set up for a C rather than a SC. I had one for a 200 that attached to the fast hitch. Really just an extra fast hitch drawbar with the mower bolted on. Does yours look like a C drawbar with a mower bolted on? That's sort of what I have for an H now, but a previous owner "customized" it quite a bit and now it doesn't work right (mounts too close to the PTO so when it breaks away the shaft comes apart).

I agree it is a 25V or 27V. I have a 31 which is very similar. My dad purchased this 31 new back in the mid 50s, and I cut approx. 70 acres with it this past year, and plan on doing the same this year. Mine is mounted on a C and uses a rod attached to one of the rock shafts to lift the cutter. I replaced all the guards a couple years ago, and adjusted it per the manual, and it does pretty good with the exception of the bearings and drive portions are getting pretty loose, and I need to give it some tlc this spring before starting out if I can get the parts. I love cutting with the C and 31 mower. Keep us updated on your progress if you do any restoration on it.

Thanks Ron, I probably won't do a "complete restoration", just some stuff like replacing the tire, hoses, pitman arm, belt, pulley, paint it, etc.

Hi, I found this information on a website that caters to Farmall H owners...."The 25V (1941-1950), 27V (1950-1954) and 31 (1955-1960 or so) Universal Tractor Mowers were all similar in design - a triangular frame mounted to the drawbar with a single caster wheel."

The hydraulic lift was optional on the 27, not standard, but most 27's had it so yours is most likely the 25 as you surmized..

My mower originally did not have a hydraulic cylinder, the brackets for the cylinder are homemade. The original manual lift lever is still there, but it is not hooked up.

I would guess it is either a 25 or a 27. They are both very simular as the 27 took the place of the 25. If it came with the 43H new it is a 25, if not, it is probably the 27. I'm not sure exactly what year the 27 replaced the 25.
