I have a 1957 Farmall Cub that I am trying to get running but I have one sticky exhaust valve. I have purchased a new valve and spring but cannot figure out how to get the old valve out. What is the proper procedure for changing the valve- or even the improper procedure as long as it works! Thank you!

Went through this a couple years back. If'n you're nimble, you may be able to use two wide bladed screwdrivers to get one out. A small magnet is very helpful for the keepers. I pulled all of mine out and broke down and got a Craftsman valve compresser,~$20 and worked fine. One that works on B&S engines will work also. Whatever ya do, DON"T drop a keeper down into the oil pan, don't ask how I know;-)

You will need a valve spring compressor for a flathead, you may be able to rent one from a parts store. Compress the spring, remove the keeper, release the compresser, spay the valve with a good penetrating oil, tap the valve out.

It would be INTERESTING to watch him "tap" a valve out of a "flathead" engine!

Sorry Eli, I don't have your answer, but a related question for those who do-
How do you tell that a valve is sticking? Do you have to watch the rockers? Can you hear it through the cover? See it out the exhaust? Feel it in the driving?

There's all sorts of shop manuals "on-line" at Rudi's Cubs.
