Friend wants to know what to look for to identify an engine he is rebuilding. It has a 3" bore and looks similar to a C engine, but must have been a power unit for something because it has about a 4" wide flat pulley on it.

Where should he look for casting numbers, serial number, etc?

Thanks!

You say looks like a C with 4in pulley. The flat pulleys were common when used on a baler and didnt have a clutch. Is there a plate beneathand between the filter and mag for a fuel pimp and is there a plate under the mag where the hy pump would go. There is a part # on the block behind the filter. What kind of # is under the #1 plug. There are several things to determine where it was used and when built ect.

Steven: 113 cubic inch stationary engine, as I see it 6 possibilities, the F-12, F-14, A-B, C, early SA or late SA vintage eingine. There should be a casting date code and a block part number. the combination should reveal your answer.

Shootin' from the hip here, but it sounds like it could be off a combine or be an old U-2 power unit. What sort of clutch and transmission setup is there to take the power to the pulley?

Serial number should still be stamped below #1 plug and casting numbers are in all the usual places.
