When you removed the belt pulley there should have been a bushing about 1in long over the belt pulley shaft where the seal is cause if its gone there is no way to stop the lube from leaking out. It slides over the splined shaft and acts as a spacer.

Doesn't the seal seal on your belt pulley?
On my C the seal seals on the cilyndrical part of the pulley. The pulley is kept onto the axle with a bolt wich also seals it. The grooves do reach the bearing.

Hope I could be of any assistance.

Kind Regards,

Kristof
