IH 686D on friends farm auction this Sat in SD. Were there different diesels on this model? I think there was a german diesel offered. Which one is better, which one wouldn't you buy?

If its a german diesel you might want to check and see if parts are still available for the injector pump. I like the german engines, but I have been told by two different people that it is getting hard to find parts for the pumps. Diesel shop in sioux city, IA said once their stock of parts is gone they can't get anymore. Lee

First they had the American D-312 (same block as D-360 a saller version of the longer and bigger 414, 436 etc) later it was the German D-310. The power fiures are about the same, the D-310 may have had less real power and it takes more money to OH anyway. If your tractor has the American engine look for a coolant filter witch containes an additive for the coolant liquid that you should have (and change it).

Yes Sir,

There is no such thing as a "bad" 686. 312 is the American engine and the German is the 310.

Just go buy it; they don't come along very darned often.

Oh by the way, ya might wanna take the piggy-bank along too. :>)

This one is at a small farm retirement sale. Advertised only in SE SD. But considering tires, tin, lets say the tires are 70%, tin and paint 80%, good running, good ta, good fast hitch, 8500 a good place to buy? I just bought a nice original 450 this morning. Is this that much better?

Just for a point of referance, last summer I paid $9500 for mine. 1980, like new rubber, 2985 hrs., very good original paint, 2 sets of remotes updated to iso., German deseil. I looked for a 686 like this for 9 months and well worth the wait. I had to get the ta adjusted shortly after I bought it but no problems since. I can"t wait to hook her up to the planter and drill next spring. What a pleasure to drive. Good luck. If it was well taken care of you should"t be disappointed

It's not the "end-all" tractor by any means. A small-framed honest 70hp tractor that is just handier than a toothpick.

It's the latest of the 560, 656, 666, 686 chain with all the improvements that came with that progression.

Nothing wrong with the 450 by any means, but the 686 is just simply a far, far better tractor.

Betcha it fetches an easy $10K.

The earley ones had the 312 american diesel and the later ones had the german 310. Both are good engines. I have a 686 with the 312 and its a screamer. Starts good and is good on fuel with plenty of power. The german 310 is also a very good engine. I have a 756 with a 310 in it. It is a cold blooded engine and sometimes takes a little funny gas to coax it to life. It runs very quiet and smooth with plenty of power and it just sips fuel. Parts for the 310's fuel system are pricey and getting hard to find but it will run 2X as long as a 312 before needing an overhaul.

Scott, I'm not sure about your 756, but our 826 always needed laughy gas to get going too. Untill we found out that if you pulled the kill cable out to where it started to pull hard and left it there, she started right up. Then push it back in of course. I don't know if this is proper procedure, but it changed the 826 from one of the hardest starting tractors on the farm to one of the easiet.

Bob

It is called fuel enrichment and works sorta like a choke. Pull it out like yo were going to kill the engine and then let off a little. You will get the hang of it pretty qick.

Bobm25...You are right, strange, but it works. Smoothest engine I have on the ranch. I like the way it idles, just about like a gas. Love that 826 german.
