The cub oil pump is built into the block. That reality limits many repairs (like replace the pump)
They do loose prime. Thicker oil will make it some better if driven often. I would fix it by using a small 3/4" plastic check valve on the oil pickup in the pan. This will take some modification of the existing pickup, but it will prevent drainback into the pan while assuring full delivery of oil. Making a new strainer for it, and making sure it has no leaks, and having the suction screen submerged will be mandatory. Good luck, JimN

check the gasket that goes between the pump body and the bottom cover , some times that gasket goes bad and a little part of it comes out, and then wont hold preasure, i have seen it on many A.s and C,s age makes it happen, there getting old. go to case IH webb and look in there parts book and you will see what i mean.

[quote:392671da83]How would you check the releaf valve?[/quote:392671da83]The problem will not be the pressure relief valve - it's located down stream from - on the pressure side of the oil pump.

If it's a mechanical problem - it' either in or at the oil pump or the oil pickup.

Suggest using a slightly heavier oil - and see what happens. I'm using 20W50

i have a hard time beleiving the oil has to take the blame for this.seams to me like a mechanical problem, probably in the heart of the machine like oil pump clearances, relief valve?pick up tube? straight grade oils are getting obsolete.

ihc49, What should I do to trouble shot this? The pump works so I would think the pick up is ok. How would you check the releaf valve? oldiron29

I have had the same problem with 10w30, switched to straight 30w, no more problems.

Are you useing a multi-grade oil? they will have a tendency to loose there prime with multi-grade oil, Try using strait 30w. I have never lost a prime in mine and it sits for weeks without running.
