Hi, I've been looking for a hydraulic pressure guage to trouble shoot my hydraulics. I found a Oxygen guage with a 1/4" nipple that fits a standard oxy/acetylene torch for about $14 that goes up to 4000 psi. Would it work if I bought one or just borrowed the one off my torch to use for a while? I don't know if a guage made for gas would work for a liquid or not or if I used the one on my torch if it might mess up my oxy regulator later. Thanks.

check your locla tractor supply, etc. in the pressure washer section.

You can get a hydraulic gage from Northern Tool. They have a website and you can order on line it there is not a store near you.

bc,use the actual hyd. fittings with black pipe.no brass fittings.

Thanks but why black iron pipe? Seems to me that brass is stronger and I don't know if electrolysis is an issue but doesn't brass stop that also?

I know generally that black pipe goes with natural gas and galv. pipe goes with water and it seems like I've heard that the galvanizing will break off in galv. pipe if used with nat. gas which then plugs up the gas valve, etc. I used all brass fittings when plumbing my fuel tank.

The guage will work for hydralics, however if you ever used it on O2 again you would be risking an explosion of the residual oil in the guages bourdon tube. (the inside element that allows a pressure guage to work) The liquid fill in a pressure guage is to dampen external vibrations, not pulsations in a pressure system. To allow a guage to work in a system with presure pulsation it will have a small restriction orfice or pulsation dampner.

to TIM ,you could use it to check the pres.butDO NOT reuse it for oxygen.you run the risk of an explosion, safety first.bugs me too when told something without a reason.

Thanks guys. Actually the farm supplies around here don't carry them. They had the oxygen ones. But they steered me to an industrial supply this afternoon that can order me one for about $20. They give me a choice of 0 to 1000, 3000, or 5000. I kinda thought the max these tractors would put out would be 3000 and the working psi is supposed to be 1600 making a 0 to 3000 guage a little more accurate. But I can order the 5000# guage if necessary. I just have to see where I can put it and what size fittings I would need. To trouble shoot the regular and power steering, I may need to use 2 different sizes. The lines going to the power steering cylinder are smaller.

Also no one with hyd. fittings carries any tees and bushings. Would you suggest brass, black pipe, or galv. pipe with that high of psi. If I can find the right place, I would leave the tee in permanently and maybe bullplug the guage hole.

Any good home/farm supply place should have what you need or a tractor dealer. You need a liquid fill gauge because of how the pressure etc effects the gauge. Last one we got cost around $25 but we went with the better one because it would read up to 5000psi

The risk of some one using it on oxygen afterword is just too great. JimN

Curious why this wouldn’t work? Mainly because I’ve done exactly what he is describing with an old oxygen tank gauge just to diagnose a hydraulic problem several times. I know not to use it again on an oxygen cylinder.

The guage needs to be liqiud filled because the oil cushions the guage when you get surges in pressure. You can buy a hyd guage cheaper than the one for a torch set and it will remain accurate.
