I've got a 1951 Cub. It has had noisey 1st & reverse gears for past few years, I've always just babied it. I've also been babying my clutch the past few months, now, it's time to replace it, so, I've just ordered a new clutch kit. I'm going to be taking it apart soon, I thought it might be a good time to fix my noisey gears? I just popped the shift cover off, doesn't look like there's much to it? Looks like if I remove rear PTO, I can access the shaft & pop it out? Slide the old gear off & new gear on? Am I right in this , or is it a challenging project & I'm going to open a big can of trouble? I've done a lot of clutches, but, never ventured into tranny repair, any advise is appreciated.

Andrew is correct, but if you do replace a gear, you also should replace the gear it runs against, otherwise the noise may be worse.

how noisey is it...?? All Cubs to some degreee have a bit of noise in the rearend it the nature of them critters. if its not grinding or screaming i would not be concered about it really. if your inclined in going into the rearend check the bearings and for any chipped teeth etc... Very simple to work on though.
