OK folks, your opinions are requested to help on the resolution of a "discussion" my husband and I are having about what to do with one of our tractors. Although he does not post frequently on this board, he visits at least once a day, and has come to highly respect your views. So, thanks in advance, and here goes.

The tractor in question is a SMTA gas, and we are the second owners. It came from a neighbor, spent its former life in front of a New Holland PTO hay baler, and has never done any more "serious" work. The original owner used one of those triangular-shaped brackets bolted directly to the U-shaped drawbar to haul the baler, and used the swinging drawbar (swung far left) only as a step to help him get into the seat - the swinging drawbar has never had anything hooked to it. The tractor is in original condition, meaning that except for the tires and battery, it's just like it rolled off the line. It has never been repainted except for some minor touch-ups here and there. The governor lock-wire is still in place, the battery hold-down is intact, the tin is straight, and the TA works fine.

Since we collect the gas-start diesels of that era, this tractor doesn't fit into our lineup, and we both believe that such an unusual piece shouldn't be buried in the back of our shed for the duration. So, the question is, what to do with it? Sell it through the photo ads here on YT (but, how would we put a price on it?), put it up for auction here or on ebay, or donate it to a non-profit like the IHC Collectors club and take the tax write-off? I say sell it, and my husband says donate it. What do you folks think? We value your opinions, so, please pass them along. This is the real deal, not some Nigerian scam. Sorry for the long post, but this is a bit complicated, as you can see. Again, thanks in advance for your help.

Virginia C.

Just wondering... If it spent most of its life behind a baler and is very original, what is the need for all the wheel weights??? Shouldn't need all those weights to pull a baler! Looks to me like it spent most of its life Tractor Pulling!!! LOL. I think you should sell it on the Photo Ads, try to get $5500 for it. Good looking tractor. The SMTA is getting harder to find and the prices are going higher all the time.

Andy.

All the other opinions are good too, but just thought I'd throw this in there- since you collect gas-start deisels, maybe you could find one of those you're looking for that could trade it for? I know a guy who has a decent 650D who'd be willing to trade for a SMTA, simply because he'd be able to get more practical use out of the SMTA than the big heavy 650D....

Put an ad in Red Power Magazine for an asking price of $5000 -- I bet you get a LOT of inquiries -- there are not that many unrestored SMTA's around in that good a condition. Or, if you want to donate it to a tractor club, that is ok too. What ever you do don't park it and just let it set.

This sounds a little like a "fishing expedition". You are probably going to get two or three dozen different opinions and all kinds of offers and expressions of interest. Great reading entertainment.
I don't care what you decide. I just hope you make sure it gets to a good home if you no longer want it. mike durhan

As far as the donation: Lets say you are in the 35% bracket. You claim a $6000.00 donation. Reduces your tax about 2100 dollars. You just sold it for that. I'd try Ebay with a reserve perhaps 4500. Or an ad here for 0.00 and take offers. Where are you located? That's one of the big things for buyers. Transportation expenses.

Donating sounds like a very noble thing to do. But you have a 4000 dollar tractor there, and thats what I would consider a low guess. I don't know how that would look on your personal tax statement. Might not make much difference. I would post a picture classified here before listing on ebay. Maybe you could sell it on this site and donate some of the money back to this site. Just remember, you can come down on price, but you can't go up. That would be the best of both world's?

I would keep it near the front of the shed and sell it at a bit more favorable economic time. They are going up in collector value, but they are not terribly rare. I would imagine close to 4500 or 5000. It is very nice, but I think they will get to twice that (but money might be worth 75% less by then). JimN

Put it to a good home. I would hang on to it even if it doesn"t fit in your lineup. A farmall"s a farmall. There all good tractors. If it was you neighbors I would keep it because of the connection. KEEP IT! or You could donate it to my collection and I would gladly restore it.
