How do I get the steering wheel off a 504. I got the cap and the nut off and pried a little bit, but it was cold and I said to heck with it and went in the house. Should I pry a little harder or is there a trick?

Been there... Remove nut, soak with penetrating oid and wait. I let mine soak over night and tapped off with a rubber mallet. I applied some "anti-sieze" to the splines before I reassembled. Had a similar issue with a lawn tractor once. Did the above and it was stuck solid so I left the nut off. I forgot about it and several mowings later on a hill, in a bad situation the steering wheel came off in my hands. Moral, replace the nut when done.

I used a 3 way puller that hooked under the wheel. About $10 to $12 at O'reillys. The bolt holes in my wheel where already full of sheared off bolts. Tightened up the puller as much as I could and left it that way. Used plenty of wd40 and still no luck. Got out the torch and within 15 seconds or so, (it didn't take much), the wheel popped loose. Even a propane or mapp torch will apply heat if you don't have oxy/acet. Keep the nut started a few turns on the shaft to keep the steering wheel out of your lap when it pops loose. It is on a tapered shaft.

I used a steering wheel puller on my 240 & 340. There are 1/4" threaded holes (fine thread I believe) in the hub of the wheel right next to where it presses onto the steering shaft to which the puller attaches. A harmonic balancer puller works also. Use an impact gun on the puller bolt with the pressure turned down. Be careful hammering on the shaft . .. I knocked out the expansion plug on mine hammering too hard! Lot's of Kroil, or equivalent.

Spray it with PB Blaster and use a puller on it.

Steering wheel puller. Your local N.A.P.A. will have one.

Is it possible to get a gear puller hooked on the wheel? But I don't know if there is room on the bottom of the wheel.
