I think the electronic ignitions seem to function better, and be lower maintenance than the old points and condenser. Seems like they make for easier starts too. I think one of the more common kits for old farmalls is made by pertronix (www.pertronix.com). Not sure what they cost now.

I still run points in my 40 H.They don't give me much trouble at all.And I never have an trouble starting it in the Minnesota cold.Guess I like the points ignition system, for two reasons that is the original system and the other I would say it is the same reason I still drive a vehicle with an analog dash, good enough for me.

Have electronic ignition on the 350 engine I put in my H and it starts easy and runs smoother then it did with points. Kept all the parts that were taken out just in case. I have been running the electronic for about a year with no problems.

GO FOR IT!!! Have electronic ignition in my Super M and it will start on the coldest of Winter days and will run perfectaly fine. Every tractor I have gets converted to electronic ignition becouse they run so much better then on points and capacitors. I even converted my lawnmowers to "solid state" ignition. It is definitely worth the money. -David Goode Coggon, IA

I still have points in my H. The problem I had was that the points weren't lasting very long. Adding a second condensor fixed that. Now they last 2-3 years, and I use my H pretty regularly.

The electronic ignitions are reliable, and I think they are a little more forgiving of worn bushings in the distributor. However, I know that I can fix the points/coil set up in the field.

i prefer the points and condenser. i keep an extra coil, cap, rotor, points and condenser in the barn. i have 10 old i-h"s . for me, its a lot easier to toss some parts at one to get er going again than to fool around trying to troubleshoot an electronic ignition.

It is true that you never have to mess with the points again, because there are no points, BUT you may end up replacing the entire electronic ignition unit. Before you buy one, compare the cost of replacing the points and condensor once per year to the cost of that electronic unit. Also, depending on how much use the tractor gets, one set of points might last several years.
