Im rebuilding a IH 484 diesel and was wondering if anyone here had any tips they could give me. Ive never done a tractor engine before or a diesel and would hate to get it all back to gether and find out I did something stupid.

The engine spun a bearing so I had to take the crank out to have it turned down. I had to tear the whole tractor apart to do this so I figured I should just buy a rebuild kit for it.

Hi Michael, are you doing an in frame rebuild or complete strip and rebuild? Buy 1 or 2 good service guides. According to my I&T manual if you replace camshaft bushing, the new bushing come semifinished and they have to be aligned and bored by a machine shop. D179 has no engine balancer to align. Rest is basic mechanics.

If you haven't already done so, you should probably get a service manual for it. You will need to know torque specs, tolerances, etc. Remember that "cleanliness is next to godliness". Keep things in order and grouped along with the nuts and bolts. A picture is worth a thousand words so if you have a digital camera you might think about taking plenty of pictures as you take it apart. A person thinks that they will remember how something goes together, until you have slept a couple of times and then it isn't quite as obvious. Think safety. Especially if you are splitting the tractor and when handling heavy parts.

A thorough check for cracks (magnaflux or dye) and a pressure check of the head wouldn't be a bad idea.
