I have a 1940 h with the pto drive broken off the back end one the countershaft. I can't find parts for it anywhere yet as it has the optional extra low low gear that is made onto the countershaft. Anyone wnoe where I might find a countershaft, or can I convert it to the normal gears set???

Where in the US are you located, Jack?

Reason I'm asking, is that I just happen to have a 1953 H that I'm parting out, and all thats left is the block, lift-all housing, rear-end with axle's, and the cast rear wheels.

And that rear end has all the gears, etc, still in it. If you're not too far away, mayhaps we might talk.

Another thought too: I also own a 1940 H, and it's PTO shaft is a dogtooth...it doesn't use the same engagement end as all other H's after '40. Regardless of what you do, you'll probably need a new PTO shaft too (that dogtooth was a weak point on early H's: ya gotta be careful when you engage it).

I am in northeast Iowa, lot of info from you all, need a day to absorb it all. I would swap if I can work it out with someone. It does have the slotted coutershaft and light duty pto shaft, I would rather have the heavier setup THANKS Jack

Hey Jack...I'm in southwest Iowa!

If you decide you'd like to change the gears (and PTO: I have the heavier shaft from the '53 also), let me know: my e-mail should be attached to my board name, and I also use notification if you reply to this message.

Hopefully you have some time...I would need to remove the deck and pull the gears you want. Chassis is going to the scrapper, but not until the weather gets better.

...or maybe you'd rather just buy the whole rear end? Then you can take what you want, and scrape the rest (at 140 180$ a ton, you might just break even).

Just another option if you like.

Jack,
Did you get the parts book pages you need? Send me an e-mail with a list. It looks like p 118 is what you need. Include your address in case my scanner can't handle the small letters

If you are replacing the low low gears with regular gears I would be interested in the low low gears if they are in good condition.

The gears themselves are fine, it is broken past the rear brg so unless you want the pto to work, they are in good shape. I would glady trade these gears for regular gears with a good pto drive

This looks like a win-win trade.

Don't overlook that the low-low package has three gears plus a countershaft with integral gear. Check parts book if in doubt about what goes with each setup.

This is copied from the CNH on-line parts book. The list looks alot more complicated than my H parts book. However, I can't compare the two references because my H book is on loan.

I don't understand why they include the 3rd and 4th gear. Only 1st and 2nd are affected. This is due to the fact the regular 1st gear is a cluster gear (two gears -1st and 2nd- on one chunk of metal). The low-low second driving gear is a single gear.

Click on the link to goto the low-low page. It may not open if you are not logged in. In that case, shorten the URL to goto home page and start from there. Enter Farmall H in search box.
