When I apply the brakes, there is a gear grinding noise. It sounds like the bull gears are moving and contacting something. I have 3 H"s and all three of them do this, one in particular is very bad. I have checked the bands and they are fine.

Two possible answers. Unless the rearend is without lube it is uncommon for them to grind internally only while braking.
The bands may look OK from the point of view of the edge, but be worn enough to allow the rivets to wear into the outside of the drum.
The brake bands might also be glazed and making vibrating grinding noise from stickstion (stick slip stick slip stick slip) this can sound low and like a groan, or higher in pitch. If that is it, sanding the glaze off the band and drum with 320 grit, will cure it for a few days (or less)but then you know what it is and can continue to ignore it. JimN
