had the mcv cover rebuilt at the local dealer and was going to reistall it when i noticed that where the plastic poppet goes that the hole looks like it has a steel plug in about 1/8 of an inch below the surface, i also remember that when i took it off i dont really recall the old one falling out like they always do, i would either hsve to try snd get plug out and figure out why it was plugged up in the first place or not put poppet in do you need the poppet and spring in what is ther purpose? even had the local ih guy stop in from the dealer and said that the plug should not be there so, what does a person do? we only do our own few tractors so i have never seen that before thanks for any help

The purpose of the sump check valve is to allow the steering hand pump to draw oil through it to prime the system if the MCV pump should fail and the steering system loose it's prime. If the sump check valve should fail then you will loose the MCV hydraulic system.

If you want to remove the plug you can push it out from the back side. The hole just goes through the housing to the reservoir.

The check valve is for manual steering incase the engine dies or wont run. Some after market TAs send that darn plug along and some mechanics just have to change things from the original. Its better if the valve is in there, but will work with the slug in. If you can push it out it would be better to do it RIGHT.

Doesn't that check valve make sure you have brakes if the engine dies.

I believe what you are talking about is the sump check plug. That steel plug has to be in that hole or your hydraullics won"t work.
