I went back today to see about this tractor. The tag is International Harvester Model FAA1 Serial # 331618 From what I can gather it is only a super A. It also has a tag stating it once belonged to the Illinois State Highway Dept. This is not a Super A1 is it??? Thanks a ton!!! Old Bob In Arkansas

Hugh, do you know if the engine serial numbers of the SA1 ran in consecutive order from FCM 206628 (consecutively through the 1957 of them manufactured)? thx

Paul: I doubt if the engine numbers are consecutive, the figures I quoted were as of July 54. The first 100 and 200 tractors came in Nov. 54, thus I would assume the 1,957 Super A1 plus a number of Super C were built between July and Nov 54 and both were drawing from the supply of FCM engines. These figures I have are not declared as first or final production numbers for a given tractor, but rather a random tally of which engine went into a given tractor.

There are other factors with these SA1, and I starting to believe they were built from left overs. I'll give you some figures to chew on, and these only have year and month.

July 54 Super A, serial 355639 engine serial FAAM 357449. That was not the last Super A, last one had serial 355679, no engine number given. Also in July Super C tractor serial 195652 engine serial FCM 204642, Super A1 tractor serial 356001 engine serial FCM 206628. They don't say when the last SC was built, however looking at these figures for July 1,986 engine numbers separate SC at that time and the first SA1. Could it be those 1,986 engines were set aside for SC, and indeed SA1 tractors do have a sequence of consecutive engine numbers. We do know that in all these tractors engine numbers climbed at a higher rate than tractor numbers. Some have suggested it was engines going for other uses, I question that, IH sold too many stationary, baler and combine engines for those numbers to be accurate.

Then we move ahead to Nov 54, 100, 200 and I100 each started at tractor serial number 501, 100 getting engine 572, 200 getting engine 663 and I100 getting engine 976. Right off we have 71 engines that went somewhere, could it be SA1 or SC.

I'm going to get busy here, will address the other thread on serial number placement later

It is probably the industrial version, although I was thinking that it would say 1AA instead of AA1, but have not seen one in a while. This would be supported by the fact a state agency owned it. I think the industrial version had a square front axle and foot operated throttle (governor), and maybe say International on the radiator. Let us know-thanks

cornfarmer: Hate to be picky, however there is a difference between I and 1. This tractor has a round axle. Tag says FAA1, which is Farmall Super A1. An industrial would say IAA1 for International Super A1. Problem is the serial number is not correct for either. All Super A1 tractors fall between 356001 and 357958. This tractors serial number is roughly 331xxx, clearly someone has been tampering with the serial tag. Ordinary Super A before serial number 356001 would be either FAA or IAA. I think you know that.

Problem here is this possibly a Super A1, only 1,957 ever built, probably one of the rarest Farmalls ever built. Folks do have a tendancy to try and create Super A1, as they do SMTA or SHTA. It looks to me as though someone, somewhere along the line thought they could create a Super A1 by adding a 1 to FAA. Truth is Super A1 are actually a Farmall 100 with SA sheet metal.

Super A1 from factory have, C-123 engine, water pump, The engine serial numbers are part of the Super C sequence, starting with engine serial number 206628, whereas the last SA had engine serial number 357449. Super A had serial number on left seat support, Super A1 has it on the left side of clutch housing, same as a 100.

Thanks, Hugh. I was hung up on the prefix, didn't even think about the serial #. Been awhile since I was around a Super A, but I see what you mean.

Serial number indicates a 1952 Super A, looks like someone has been playing games with the tag.

Bob: Serial number definitely says no. Does it look like someone may have stamped that 1. Does it have a water pump? What size is the breather stack pipe? Do the brake activation rods look as though they attach to end of band, or to a pivot that both ends of band attach to? What are the casting date codes? How much space is there between touch control unit and fuel tank? All those things can solve this.

Someone has been tampering, might be a SA1 with a lost tag and someone replaced the tag with a wrong number and stamped it 1. It could also be a hoax.

Front axle is round. Distance between bottom of fuel tank and top of hydraulic casting is not very muchm maybe 1 1/2 inch. Does not have a drawbar, as such as a drawbar, but a curved piece of metal with probably a dozen holes.

Bob: Fuel tank on Super a is about 3/4" above hydraulics Super A1 close to 2-1/2" Also couple items I forgot before, serial tag on SA is on the left seat support and on SA1 serial tag is on left side of clutch housing. The water pumps on those are down near bottom of rad and block, on the left side. Without a pump main fan belt only goes around crank pulley and fan pulley, with water pump it goes around a 3rd pulley, thus a longer fan belt.

Another item you might look at is engine serial number. It's on a machined flat surface, just below number 1 spark plug. Those numbers are stamped and not cast in place. Super A engine serial numbers after June 1952 are all over 332287, tractor serial number on that date would have been 330738. According to the number you gave 331xxx, the tractor would have been built shortly after that date. Super A1 tractors shared the same series of engine serial numbers as the Super C, starting at number 206628.
