Super A Engine Question

Hello all,

I have a question about a Super A engine. I use my Super A with rear mounted 7' sickle bar to cut about 30 - 40 acres of hay last year. It worked very well with the exception of the points going bad. I replaced them and we were off and running again.

The question I had was when I was mowing I noticed at times that there was either exhaust or maybe oil coming out the oil filler / breather. This happened most often when I was mowing UP a hill, or when the engine was under heavy usage maybe. when on the flat ground and down hill I didn't notice it at all or not much at all if any.

I am wondering what is causing that? Is that normal?

I did a compression test on it at the beginning of last year and what I found was approx 90 psi average with one cylinder a bit higher. I can repeat the testing again I guess this spring to see how they are comparatively.

So I didn't know really if that exhaust or oil coming out that breather is something I should be worried about? Does the engine maybe need some rebuilding or work?

I plan on using it again this year to mow hay so I want to make sure (to the best I can) that it'll run well all season. I probably will be cutting closer to 60 or 70 acres this year with it all total.

Any suggestions on what I should check or do (if anything) please let me know.

Thanks.

HI Guys

thanks for the info. Sounds like things might be OK. for awhile anyway! I still have a good amount of power in my opinion. I mow up some steeper hills with it and have to use 1st gear but she still makes it ok. usually use 3rd gear on the flat while mowing.

thanks again

Mark

Some trastors have a tube that goes from the air cleaner to the engine. I think it is 3/8 dia. It is a vent for the crank case. If that is blocked it will vent out the oil cap.

A Super "A" DOES vent out the oil fill cap.

It's called "blowby", and all engines have it, to some degree.

If it is still providing plenty of power, and not using a significant amount of oil, you're probably still quite aways off from needing to OH the engine.
